Poetry Poetic Devices

Symbols SYMBOL - a symbol has two levels of meaning, a literal level and a figurative level. Characters, objects, events and settings can all be symbolic in that they represent something else beyond themselves.

Atmosphere/Mood ATMOSPHERE / MOOD - is the prevailing feeling that is created in a story or poem. The poem is dark, happy, funny.

Rhyme Correspondence of terminal sounds of words or of lines of verse. When do you think Rhyme is used in Poetry outside of Shakespeare? What about in Popular Culture like the music you like? What are its effects on you?

Imagery IMAGERY - is the representation through language of sense experience. The image most often suggests a mental picture, but an image may also represent a sound, smell, taste or tactile experience.

Other Useful Literary Devices personification: the endowment of inanimate objects or abstract concepts with animate or living qualities Example: “Time let me play / and be golden in the mercy of his means” hyperbole: exaggeration for emphasis (the opposite of understatement) Example: “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”

The Most Common Simile: comparison between two essentially unlike things using words such as “like," as," or “as though” Example: “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun” Metaphor: comparison between essentially unlike things without using words OR application of a name or description to something to which it is not literally applicable Example: "[Love] is an ever fixed mark, / that looks on tempests and is never shaken.”

Allusions A reference to the person, event, or work outside the poem or literary piece (often to religion, Greek mythology, est. The event or person that the author refers to often as significant meaning to what they are writing about). Example: “Shining, it was Adam and maiden”

Alliteration: Alliteration is the repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables of a phrase. Example: "Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers"
