HUMAN RIGHTS dignity and justice to all of us “The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.” - John F. Kennedy The presentation was prepared by students from Stanislaw Staszic Middle School no. 3 in Starogard Gdanski

ISSUES CONNECTED WITH HUMAN RIGHTS ARE A VERY RELEVANT PART OF OUR COMENIUS PROJECT „UNITY IN DIVERSITY”. THEREFORE, WE ASKED THIRD GRADE STUDENTS TO CHOOSE TWO VOLUNTEERS TO REPRESENT EACH CLASS IN A HUMAN RIGHTS COMPETITON. “Remember, the change you want to see in the world, and in your school, begins with you.” ― Joseph Clementi

THE COMPETITON WAS DIDVIDED IN TWO PARTS. FIRSTLY, STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO PREPARE SOME POSTERS PRESENTING PICTURES AND SLOGANS CONNECTED WITH HUMAN RIGHTS “ All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” ― United Nations The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 1

SECONDLY, EACH TEAM HAD TO ASNWER SOME QUESTIONS IN A TEST FORM. THE SOURCES OF THE QUESTIONS WERE PRESENTED EARLIER SO THAT THERE WAS ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE, FOR EXAMPE: * THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS * DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD * CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD *AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – HISTORY, INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS ACTIVITIES, ETC... “No matter how pathetic or pitiful, every human is fated to have one moment in their lives in which they can change their own destiny.” ― Takayuki Yamaguchi, Shigurui 11

OUR VERY STUDENT FRIENDLY TEST CONSISTED OF TEN QUESTIONS AND LASTED FOR 30 MINUTES SO THE PARTICIPANTS COULD TAKE THEIR TIME ;) “We can be of many nations, but earth is our land. We can be of many races, but we are just one clan.” ― Ricardo Derose

HERE ARE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS FROM THE TEST: * GIVE THE EXACT DATE OF ADOPTING THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS * NAME THREE NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS FIGHTING FOR AND PROTECTING HUMAN RIGHTS *MENTION THREE LAWS THAT CAN BE FOUND IN THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS *WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE PRESENT OMBUDSMAN FOR CHILDREN IN POLAND? “We are not going to always agree with each other, but we should have the dignity to always respect each other’s freedom of speech and of choice. Democracy is practiced when we have respect for human rights.” ― Ellen J. Barrier

THE POSTERS “Freedom rings bells to wake us from the comfort of beautiful dreams and empower the efforts that turn them into reality.” ― Aberjhani, Illuminated Corners: Collected Essays and Articles Volume I

THE POSTERS “The true civilization is where every man gives to every other man every right he claims for himself.” ― Robert G. Ingersoll

THE POSTERS “We are the children of one creator. We are different in some ways. Yet, we are equal.” ― Ellen J. Barrier

THE PARTICIPANTS WERE REWARED WITH DIPLOMAS AND BOOKS ’’To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.” - Nelson Mandela

THE AIM OF THE COMPETITON WAS TO ENRICH STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS, WE HOPE WE DID. ’’Human rights is the soul of our foreign policy, because human rights is the very soul of our sense of nationhood.” - Jimmy Carter

THANK YOU FOR ATTENTION ’’I look forward confidently to the day when all who work for a living will be one with no thought to their separateness as Negroes, Jews, Italians or any other distinctions. This will be the day when we bring into full realization the American dream - a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few; a dream of a land where men will not argue that the color of a man's skin determines the content of his character; a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone, but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity; the dream of a country where every man will respect the dignity and worth of the human personality.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
