An Ontology and Semantic Web Application with Responsive Dissemination Features Sara Dexter, Michael Knapp, Bob McLaughlin, David Gibson

Responsive Dissemination Digital resources easy to access but perhaps hard to find and evaluate Information can be noisy For knowledge construction the needed information varies by learner Ideally, trusted, knowledgeable service providers distribute best practices and human resources

Semantic Web Semantic Web adds machine processable data to information and documents on the WWW Applications return to users more precisely useful information –RSS –FOAF Requires an ontology (a sort of framework of terms) –World standards a start---further development needed –Terms applicable to resources and documents are its metadata

Leeber, a Semantic Web Application Funded by PT3 and TICG grants to NICI 1.Development and refinement of ontology 2.Online cataloguing of resources 3.Reviewers input and selections 4.Users resource recommendations 5.Responsive resource dissemination

portals Each entry point associated with an technical assistance organization in education Each portals members located and/or reviewed its resources Resources cataloged with metadata by a librarian Resources are organized along dimensions that represent aspects of metadata –link, description, general info, catalog graphic, catalog cross-references

Responsive Dissemination through My Collection Requires registration 1.Browse - click tracking pushes matches to resources with similar metadata tags 2.Find Similar & Search - pushes matches to resources with similar metadata tags 3.Questionnaire - answers linked to metadata tags –like a search but doesnt even require knowledge of search terms
