TOGA TOGAS WERE A PRIVILEGED GARMENT WORN ONLY BY MALE ADULT ROMAN CITIZENS. ATRIUM ATRIUM The (1) Atrium was the major receiving room in the front of the Roman home. In the middle of the Atrium was the (2)Impluvium which was a shallow pool used for collecting rainwater. Directly above the Impluvium was the Compluvium. The Compluvium was a hole in the roof through which the water came into the Impluvium. Also in the atrium was the Lararium, which was a shrine to the house- hold gods. The Atrium was often sparsely furnished but finely decorated with frescoes or marble on the walls and fine marble or mosaics for flooring. The “paterfamilias”--father of the family--would receive his clients in the atrium every morning to dole out money or food and jobs for them to perform.

THE WORD “ATRIUM” COMES FROM THE WORD “ATER” OR “BLACK”. IN EARLIEST ROMAN TIMES, THE ATRIUM WOULD HAVE SERVED AS A CENTRAL PLACE FOR THE HEARTH AND FIRE IN A SMALLER HOME OR HUT. THE HOLE IN THE CEILING ABOVE THE FIRE WOULD HAVE ALLOWED THE SMOKE TO ESCAPE AND DARKENED THE WALLS, HENCE THE COLOR IN THE NAME.
