HARNET Update By Charles Choy Senior network engineer Hong Kong Academic Research Network

Agenda Hong Kong Internet Background HARNET Background Internet2 Connection Plan

Hong Kong Internet Background Population 6.8 million At Dec/2001, Internet users 2.6M (39% of population) Dialup vs Broadband : (3.2 to 1) WAN technology – ATM OC3, FE, GE International fiber capacity 164G capacity : 16 times increase in G activated (70% Japan, 10% China, 10% US)

HARNET Background - History Hong Kong Academic Research Network 8 local universities and most tertiary institutions Found in 1985 (BITNET) First Internet connection in 1992 Internet2 connection in 2002 (planned)

HARNET – current network Star Topology Each institution connected by 2 OC3 circuits using public ATM services GE planned for interconnecting some members QOS and multicast tested on HARNET

HARNET – current network Commodity Internet 72M connection to ISP for international traffic 80M connection to HK Internet Exchange Other International connection 2M direct IPLC to CERNET 155M circuit to TANET

Internet2 Plan – Resources Government wants, but provides minimal funding Solution: Find sponsors Level3 donates DS3 x 3 international circuits PCCW donates domestic circuits Cisco donates network devices Trans Pacific IPLC – most expensive

Internet2 connection plan - BUT Level3 ran into financial trouble All Asian Assets sold to Reach (Consortium of PCCW and Telstra) Request Reach to continue the donation

Internet2 – Research We are newcomers Interested in IPv6, Multicast GRID computing, Telemedicine, Distance Learning
