City and Islington College Project to define and enhance scholarly activity at City and Islington College. Ian Sterling – College HE Quality and Development Manager

Students at the Heart of the System Purpose: To maintain and enhance the quality of the student experience and the linked area of colleagues work satisfaction

Steps Define scholarly activity for City and Islington College Develop a plan of action to maintain and enhance scholarly activity, working with university partners where appropriate.

Context: HE in FE at City and Islington College The College has a number of Foundation Degrees, PGCEs in Life Long Learning, and HNC/Ds awarded by local universities or Edexcel. Together with a small amount of non prescribed HE. The majority of programmes are level 4 and 5 and definitions of scholarly activity are for delivery at this level in QAA Framework of HE Qualifications in England and Northern Ireland.

Audit to find current situation An audit of the College’s 84 staff teaching on HE was undertaken using 22 criteria developed following discussions with the HEA, and consideration of the criteria used by a College in an HEA funded project. A recommendation following the audit was to provide time for staff teaching on HE for scholarly activity

Considerations Students and staff UK Quality Code for Higher Education HEA UK Professional Standards Framework Noted. QAA: Draft for Consultation RHEFE section 11. Expectations on the management of quality assurance of Higher Education.

Agreement with UCU UCU and the College recognised the importance of resourcing and facilitating Scholarly Activity and Continuing Professional Development for HE teaching staff. From 1 January 2012 an amount of remission time to carry out activities is calculated by multiplying the number of hours taught on HE provision by 1.15 To be used on:

Industrial secondments or work shadowing Developing Materials for the College’s VLE Projects with SSCs or equivalent Research and publications Studying towards achievement of higher qualifications HE curriculum development for instance programme and module specifications Enhancement of teaching and learning Development of assessment methodologies Peer review methodology

Future 12/13 Review progress Formal agreements with University partners. Handbook and inset on sessions on stages of staff development. Consideration of becoming a member of the HEA.
