All these singers are English and used their vocals as their instruments.

Thousands of people were sent to America because they were taken for slaves. Life was horrible for the Africans because they had to work a lot as slaves. The music was important to the slaves because it kept a beat going while they worked. The most popular instrument was the drums. They used off beats whilst playing. Off beats are the beats of 2 and 4. All the instruments used were: drums, shakers, tambourines, anklets and fiddles. All this happened in the 18 th century.

The slaves travelled by ship to get from west Africa to north America. This was very upsetting for the slaves as they didn’t want to become slaves and everything they had in west Africa had been taken away from them as they had to travel to north America. Once the slaves had travelled to north America they were sold to white people.
