Bell Ringer Please come in, become silent, and answer these questions. What is the definition of MELODY ? What is the definition of TIMBRE ? What are the letter names for Bass Clef staff Lines? What are the letter names for Bass Clef staff Spaces?

There are seven (7) basic elements of music: Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Tempo, Dynamics, Form, and Timbre. Today, we will be learning more about the elements.

Learning Targets I can define and give examples of Dynamics. I can define and give examples of Tempo.

Dynamics Dynamics – The fullness of sound; volume. a) How loud or soft the music is b) Getting louder or softer in music * We use special symbols in music to describe dynamics.

Examples of Dynamics in music A Novice's Guide to Music- Dynamics

Tempo Tempo – The speed of the beat in music * We use special words and symbols to describe tempo in music.

Lento — slowly Largo — broadly Adagio — slow and stately (literally, "at ease") Andante — at a walking pace Moderato — moderately Allegro — fast, quickly and bright Vivace — lively and fast (quicker than allegro) Presto — very fast

Tempo is often measured in Beats Per Minute (b.p.m.) Example: Allegro might be 120 b.p.m. A device called a metronome is often used to measure tempo

Examples of Tempo in music Beat and Tempo

The Elements we have discussed so far… Melody Timbre Dynamics Tempo

and… Harmony Form Rhythm

Activity We will be listening to some musical examples. On a sheet of paper, you will be describing the music we listen to in terms of the 7 elements we have discussed: melody, timbre, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, form, harmony.

Here’s what you do… Divide your paper into 7 blocks or sections for each example. In each block, write one of the elements: Melody, Timbre, Dynamics, Tempo, etc. For the listening examples, describe these elements in the appropriate box. You must attempt to use musical terms we have used in class.
