The admission average is the average of the five-six courses required for admission. For those students who have required courses that are being taken in the second semester of high school, and for which grades are not available, the prerequisite course (usually grade 11) will be used to make a grade estimate for the specific admission course. Electives are other courses (besides the specifically named courses) that may be used towards your admission average.

Scholarships University/College Scholarships Complete the scholarship application at the same time as the application for admission. Add a resume outlining school and community involvement. Add reference letters (2) Don’t miss the deadline! It may be different from the admission deadline!

Scholarship Terms Award: An award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement. Awards may be in the form of books, plaques, subscriptions or money. A monetary award is usually called a scholarship or bursary. Bursary: A non-repayable grant of money, bursaries are awarded primarily based on financial need, but academic achievement is also considered. Usually, the applicant must provide detailed documentation describing their financial situation when applying for a bursary. Scholarship: A non-repayable sum of money awarded to a student to help finance further education. Most scholarships are based on merit in areas ranging from academic achievement to athletics. Usually, scholarships are not based on financial need. Entrance Award/Scholarship: A scholarship or award given to a student entering his/her first year at a post-secondary institution. Also referred to as an Admission Award. In-course Award/Scholarship: Awarded to students already enrolled in post-secondary studies, beyond the first year level. Source:

Bursaries What are they? Bursaries are financial prizes awarded to graduating students going on to post-secondary education. Criteria for each bursary is usually consistent with the nature of the sponsoring group and is stipulated by the donor. Not only awarded to top academic students. A well rounded student is an excellent applicant.

Bursaries How to Apply? Applications are available at the Guidance Centre and on-line. Check the SJHS website for listing of on-line scholarship/bursary opportunities. Determine which are applicable to you. Complete application and include an official transcript of marks.

When to Apply? Applications arrive at SJHS beginning in September and continue until June. Keep eye on Web-site (ticker). Deadlines vary. How Much Money is Available? On average, bursaries range from $250-$1000 in financial aid. Most are non-renewable.

It is your responsibility to determine which bursary applications are available, which apply to you, and to mail completed applications.
