 Took over the San Francisco Examiner in 1887  Acquired the New York Morning Journal in 1895  Launched Evening Journal in 1896  Gained a reputation of employing the best journalists available: Ambrose Bierce, Stephan Crane, Mark Twain, Richard Harding Davis, and Jack London  At his peak, owned: 28 major newspapers, 18 magazines, and Several radio stations and movie companies

 Turned the newspaper into a combination of reformist investigative reporting and lurid sensationalism  Introduced banner headlines and lavish illustrations  Famous yellow journalist
