Apprenticeships and Skill Trades

What is an Apprenticeship and how does it work ? Is a hands-on training for people who enjoy learning by doing. Is a practical method of learning specific job skills.

What is an Apprenticeship and how does it work? Continue 90% of the apprentice job training occurs on the job site, doing the work and the other 10% occurs in a classroom setting through a college or an approved training facility. You observe a journey person (skilled worker) and then learn to practice those skills.

How long does an Apprenticeship last? Most take between 2 to 5 years to complete.

What Type Of Work Does A Skilled Trades Person Do? Construction sector: Brickwork, Cement Work, Framer, Electrician, Plumber, Painter, Refrigeration.

What Type Of Work Does A Skilled Trades Person Do? Industrial Sector: Cabinet Maker, Welder, Machinist, Draftsperson.

Entrance Averages Universities look at your 6 BEST marks including ENG 4U + Prerequisites + Others Colleges look at ENG 4C + grade 11 or 12 prerequisites. Average needed : often 70% or more SO MARKS DUE COUNT

TRANSCRIPTS YOUR TRANSCRIPT IS FULL DISCLOSURE This means that all course you take, pass or fail, low mark or high mark, is written on your high school transcript.

MONEY Colleges essentially give no money to students. There may be some awards or bursaries. Universities are much more generous. Entrance Scholarships are popular.

MONEY - Scholarships At some Universities scholarships are automatic and others you must apply for MARKS = $ FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND TIME IN CLASS = MARKS = MONEY STARTS AT THE AVERAGE OF 80%

Scholarships Con’t University: Some are entrance scholarships and some are renewable if you maintain an expected average. Scholarships are calculated on all 4U courses that have been completed, plus They look at the previous grade if not completed eg: 4U BIO in Sem 2  look at 3U BIO Marks

MONEY - Bursaries Money for FREE They don’t solely depend on marks, but marks count. They look at community involvement, school involvement, youth groups or organizations in which you belong plus other things.

MONEY - OSAP Ontario Students Assistance Program Money you pay back after your education is complete – you have 6 months free interest. You apply only AFTER you have made a decision as to where you are going & make a commitment to one university or college.

MONEY – OTHER SOURCES DSBN Sources of Financial Assistance (Marks and Volunteer Experience). Scholarships.com (excellent resource, you answer questions they you with scholarship opportunities). Ms. Grégoire – A lot of $$$$ comes across her desk all in which is announced on the PA system. Take advantage of these opportunities.
