ICEL Luke 10:25-37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

ICEL Luke 10:25-37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.

ICEL Luke 10:25-37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

ICEL The Parables of Jesus Matthew 13:34 34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. Why parables? To make it extra difficult to understand? - He breaks open the way of salvation for people outside the Jews. - Jews and Heathen are put on an equal footing - Not the right set of rules, dogma or tribe, but “Faith” for all. (prophesy fulfilled Psalm 78…I will open my mouth in parables…) - “Hunger” Matthew 5 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

ICEL Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl Matthew 13: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. How do you value the kingdom of heaven? How do you think you can “inherit” eternal life? They all moved! (went away and sold…) You have to steer your donkey to the other side of the road!

ICEL Back to the Good Samaritan… - The priest and the Levite had “legal” excuses. If the man was dead, they would have become defiled for a long time (not practical for their “Job” at the temple…) - The man was naked: “They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.” He was not identifiable. How could they know if he was a Jew? - The Levite (served with the priest at the temple) had the priest as example….If he does not, then I need not… - The Samaritan: The risk-taker who had mercy! He “became” as a neighbor! (coming close: ho plesion) Matthew 5: 7 Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.

ICEL Coming Close, taking risks… 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” You never will know who is your neighbor unless you dare to come close and become a neighbor to others. Jesus speaks to the crowd in parables. Where in the crowd are you standing? Does He speak to you?
