INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS JRA-06 (INTAG) Description of Work: Task 1: Improvement of RDT method Focal plane RDT detectors Prompt radiation spectrometers for RDT RDT detector exploitation Task 2: Application of tagging method to ISOL beams Magnetic pre-selection Tests with target detectors Magnetic separator design Task 3: Application of tagging method to in-flight separated beams Ge detectors Tracking detectors Task 4: Z,A-identification for medium-mass and heavy nuclei Gas detectors Silicon Detectors Objectives: The main objective of this Joint Research Activity is the improvement of nuclear tagging techniques. INTAG will be concerned with the development of instrumentation (separators and detectors) that is used to identify the radioactive nuclei with respect to their atomic number Z and mass number A. This is expected to increase the experimental peak-to-background ratio in specific cases by several orders of magnitude

INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS FINIS

INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS Task 1: Improvement of RDT method (Jyväskylä) Extend the method from α-decay tagging to β-γ tagging, for the study of N~Z nuclei. Requires high granularity and small signal detection. General testing of the method will be carried out using the focal plane spectrometer (segmented Si – Ge array). Subtask “Focal plane RDT detectors": Extension of GREAT and other focal plane spectrometers to include segmented planar Ge and large clover Ge (Daresbury, Liverpool); extension of the RDT method from  -decay tagging to  tagging (Daresbury, Jyväskylä, Liverpool); conceptual design of ASICs (Saclay). Subtask “Prompt radiation spectrometers for RDT": Digitisation of signals from detectors for prompt radiation (Daresbury, Jyväskylä, Liverpool); development of new prompt radiation spectrometers (Daresbury, Jyväskylä, Liverpool). Subtask “RDT detector exploitation”: Marry extended GREAT to focal plane of RITU, in-beam testing; provide RITU expertise and accelerated beams (Jyväskylä).

INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS Task 2: Application of tagging method to ISOL beams (ISOLDE) Apply the RDT method to ISOL beams. Improve in-beam and radioactive decay studies of short-lived exotic nuclei, selected using (i) laser ionization, (ii) magnetic separation before and/or after secondary reaction, (iii) RDT, for ISOL beams. Requires better magnetic selectivity of the ISOLDE-HRS separator. Close links will also be made with the LASER JRA. A design study will be made for a magnetic spectrometer that will transport particular reaction products following the secondary reaction. Subtask “Magnetic pre-selection": Design of beam emittance meters and upgrade of ISOLDE HRS also using beam cooling, provide accelerated radioactive ion beams (ISOLDE). Application of ion selection using laser resonance techniques (Leuven). Subtask "Tests with target detectors": Development of prototype large solid-angle Bragg spectrometer for application to weak radioactive beams (Liverpool, Daresbury, ISOLDE). Test of 12-fold segmented Ge detector in weak radioactive beams (Leuven) and development of tracking algorithms (Strasbourg). Analysis of Coulex (Warsaw). Subtask "Magnetic separator design": Design of magnetic separator for selection of reaction products after secondary target (GANIL, Weizmann, Leuven, Jyväskylä, Liverpool).

INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS Task 3: Application of tagging method to in-flight separated beams (GSI) Radioactive decay studies and Coulomb excitation of short-lived exotic nuclei, selected by RDT, following fragmentation of relativistic beams, slowing or stopping of beams. Studies to determine the optimum configuration for a RDT set-up for studying multiple Coulomb excitation and transfer reactions following slowing down of fragmentation products. Investigate the role of large energy spread, emittance and beam size, and tracking. Networking between INTAG and the RHIB JRA necessary. Subtask "Tracking detectors": Development of tracking detectors for fragmentation beams; test of prototype transmission detectors; provide radioactive ion beams (GSI, Warsaw, Leuven). Investigate influence of the fragment beam emittance on angular distribution measurements, look for possible corrections using fragment tracking at the FRS (Leuven). Design studies of optimal RDT set-ups (GSI, Warsaw, Leuven). Activities connected close to HISPEC/DESPEC. Subtask "Ge detectors": Development of segmented Ge planar detectors, of algorithms for pulse shape analysis and event tracking (Strasbourg). Implementation of large energy spread, emittance and beam size vs. analysis of Coulex data using the GOSIA code (Warsaw).

INTAG Peter Butler, JRA-06 INTAG I3 EURONS Task 4: Z,A-identification for medium-mass and heavy nuclei (Legnaro) Z, A determination for medium-mass and heavier nuclei using PRISMA at INFN, Legnaro and VAMOS at GANIL, Caen. Development of ionisation and tracking detectors effective for slow, heavy ions allowing unique identification of reaction products. Study application of pulse-shape analysis in Si detectors. Development of suitable transmission position-sensitive detector with minimal stopping power. Subtask "Gas detectors": Development of a secondary-electron gas detector with a thin emissive film to be used in conjunction with PRISMA in order to detect low energy heavy- ions and/or light ions at the focal plane of the magnetic spectrometer; bench tests of the detector in UK and its in-beam commissioning at LNL (Daresbury, Saclay, Legnaro). Further development of large area MCP and MWPPAC; bench tests and in-beam commissioning at LNL (Legnaro). Development of a recoil tagging system based on Si strip detectors for the gas-filled mode operation of PRISMA; bench tests of the tagging detector and its in-beam commissioning at LNL (Legnaro).
