Building Pathways to Construction Building pathways to construction Elise Toomey, Manager RMIT VET in Schools

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 2 Building pathways to construction Bachelor Degree Enter third year, second out of School Diploma Building and Construction Enter second year, first year out of School Certificate IV Building and Construction Year 11 and 12 as a VET in Schools Program

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 3 The path Building pathways to construction is a VET in Schools initiative. Year 11 and 12 – VCE or VCAL Student complete the Certificate IV in Building and Construction VET in Schools subject ran every Wednesday Example, Billy enters program in yr 11 in Attends RMIT every Wed for 2 yrs.

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 4 The path Successful completion of the Cert IV leads to the second year of the Diploma of Building and Construction during the students first year out of secondary school. Example: Billy has now completed year 12 and enters the second year of the diploma in 2011.

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 5 The path On successful completion of the Diploma, students can enter third year of the Bachelor of Construction Management or the Bachelor of Project Management Billy is now 19 (2012) and enters the third year of the bachelor. He completes the bachelor with the fourth year being in At 21, he graduates with a Certificate IV Building and Construction, the Diploma of Building and Construction and the Bachelor of Construction Management (or Project Management).

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 6 Why? Education By pass the ENTER/ATAR, reward students for dedication and commitment regardless of exam scores and manipulate a pathway that has successful and positive outcomes Equity. The project allows VCAL students to enter university. Moreover, the VCE student who is dedicated but didn’t get an ENTER of 88 can still get to where they want to go. According to the Bradley review, TAFE and Higher Education need more successful linkages Employment The student with the bachelor as well as the diploma and the certificate IV are viewed upon as more desirable to an employer than the student with just one qualification, even the bachelor.

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 7 Intellectual Justice Rewards for skills, passion, engagement and commitment as opposed to getting a high ENTER It promotes bachelor degrees to a student cohort who may not have considered higher education previously.

RMIT University©2008 Information Technology Services 8 Selection process Student academic ability is NOT a consideration, students DO NOT sit aptitude tests. Selection is based on student commitment, engagement, passion and focus Parents are encouraged to participate in the selection process and are invited to attend a parent information evening prior to the student submitting an expression of interest form. Teacher reference is recommended Students then sit an interview
