Myth, Legends, Proverbs Project Interpretations Instructions

Instructions You will need one interpretation for each myth, legend, or proverb. All interpretations must be your original work and must be cleared through turnitin.com. Plagiarized interpretations will receive a zero and a referral to the office because you made a conscious choice to copy someone else’s work.

Myths Explain what the myth is about and what lesson is learned from the myth or why the myth was created. Example: The myth of Pandora’s Box was created to explain the origin of women. It also tells that curiosity can be a dangerous quality. Finally the myth also reveals where all of the world’s evils originated. Each interpretation should be between three and five sentences long.

Legends Explain what the legend is about and what lesson is learned from the legend, or why the legend was created. Example: The Paul Bunyan legend tells us about how many of the natural formations of our country were made by the strength and power of an amazing lumberjack. Paul Bunyan’s footprints created the Great Lakes. Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox created the Grand Canyon while traveling across the land dragging an ax, and he created Mount Hood by stacking rocks.

Proverbs Explain what the literal meaning of the proverb is. What is being said by just the words given? Explain what the figurative meaning of the proverb is. What is the underlying lesson or wisdom? Give an example of how or when the proverb might be used.

Proverbs cont’d Example: “A stitch in time saves nine” literally means that sewing a small hole with a single stitch will prevent a person from having to use nine stitches to close the hole when is gets bigger. On a figurative level, this proverb means taking time to fix small problems will prevent a bigger problems from evolving. A good time to use this proverb would be when a person is neglecting something that can be easily and quickly fixed, especially if the problem will get worse if left unattended.

Process Work on one item at a time. Read the myth, legend or proverb carefully, maybe even twice just to be sure. Write all of your interpretations on ONE WORD document and save it on your hard drive or flash drive. Once you have proofread your work, send the document to turnitin.com (by 3/16) for scanning and authentication.

Process cont’d. Once your written work has been cleared, you can manipulate the text to be the size and font you wish for your project. You can begin designing your project layout AFTER you read the layout directions.
