Class Procedures & Requirements Trig/Analyt(Pre-Calc/Trig) Mrs. Holman

WELCOME TO TRIG/ANALYT I am looking forward to assisting you in learning and have high expectations of you for this year. Working together, we will share a rewarding and successful year. Excellence is not a skill... It is an attitude!

Mrs. Sheri Holman Education: BGSU – Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education Ashland – Master of Education in Computer Technology Experience: (19 years) Solon High School 2002-Present Wooster High School Vermilion HS & Middle School

Course Objectives REQUIRED MATERIALS n Textbook with acceptable cover n A sharpened pencil, pen, and colored pencils n Notebook for notes and homework (3-ring binder is recommended) n A graphing calculator (TI-nspire or TI-84 + recommended) n 2 dry erase markers This course provides the tools that you will need for college mathematics courses, particularly Calculus. You will build on your learning from Algebra II and Geometry to construct a deeper understanding of functions. As you study Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry, you will be investigating functions in new ways and working with more abstract forms, including trigonometric functions. You will develop a deeper understanding of the concepts of limits, area and slope that are essential in the development of Calculus.

Class GoalsExpectations 1. Be ready to learn when the bell rings. Class is over when you are dismissed by the teacher. 2. Listen to and follow directions the first time. 3. RESPECT others at all times. Common courtesy is expected. 4. Participate in class discussions and group activities, complete all assignments on time and ask questions! · To apply pre-calculus topics to real world problems · To explore concepts and develop mathematical relationships through observation and application · To employ technology to solve problems · To learn in a cooperative setting · To communicate mathematics

Key Topics of Study Applications of vectors and trigonometric functions Applications of vectors and trigonometric functions Algebraic fluency and simplification techniques Algebraic fluency and simplification techniques Modeling using a variety of functions Modeling using a variety of functions Matrices and linear transformations Matrices and linear transformations Conic Sections Conic Sections Transformations of Functions Periodic Functions and Their Graphs Area Under a Curve as the foundation for integration Inverses, Exponentials, and Logarithmic Equations and Applications Limits at infinity and at a point Properties of functions including: continuity, increasing vs. decreasing, and concavity Average rates of change and instantaneous rates of change as a foundation for derivatives Polar and Parametric graphical systems.

Assistance I am here to help you so if at any time you are having a problem pertaining to this class please see me immediately so that we can remedy the problem as quickly as possible. I am available most days both before and after school. The Math Lab is also available during the school day.

Ten Benefits of Being in This Class Self-Confidence Be Part of a Team Personal Reflection Love of Learning & Mathematics Compassion Goal Achievement – Perseverance Pride/Passion Belief in Yourself & Your Ability Life Lessons Courage

Self-Confidence Self-Confidence: With knowledge comes confidence. This course is preparing you for college and for your future. The more prepared you are, the more confident you are, the more successful you will be. I hope to foster a confidence in you through positive attitude and reinforcement and create an educational environment where you can be your very best self.

Be Part of a Team Be Part of a Team: It is a great feeling to be able to say “We did this!” when you collaboratively work toward a goal with your team. Teamwork fosters good communication skills and the ability to work well with others, an important trait that employers are always seeking in their candidates. Through the activities in this course you will learn to work effectively as a team member and function well as team leaders. I hope that you will feel important, accepted and part of something great.

Personal Reflection Personal Reflection: I hope that through my efforts to create a positive and welcoming classroom environment that you will reflect upon what is truly important in life and become positive role models through your daily actions and decisions. You are all within a year or two of graduating from high school and I hope that you will realize that you can make a difference in the world simply by always striving to be your very best self.

Love of Learning & Mathematics Love of Learning and Mathematics: I went into education because I have a love of learning and I believe that if one is always searching to learn new things and improve oneself then they will be positive contributors to society. I love mathematics because I enjoy the logical reasoning and puzzle solving that is important in mathematics and I hope to help foster this love in you as well. I hope that you will leave this class with a positive mind-set toward mathematics.

Compassion Compassion: Every day is a fresh start. I will be an advocate for you each and every day and do my best to greet each one of you with a smile on a daily basis. I realize that you will have good days and bad days and I also realize that there will be days when math is not the most important thing in your life at that moment. I will aim to be aware of your daily stresses and make an effort to alleviate some of it if possible. I hope that by modeling this compassion, you will also be kindhearted toward your classmates and develop a genuine concern for the welfare of others. I hope you will come to realize that your personal actions do matter.

Goal Achievement / Perseverance Goal Achievement/Perseverance: It is my hope that you will recognize that success is a journey not a destination and that you will continue to create goals for your life and your education and continuously strive to meet those goals. It is to the one who endures that the final victory comes. I hope that you will never give up on your dreams.

Pride / Passion Pride/Passion: I hope that the environment in my classroom and the relationships that you develop with everyone will give you a sense of pride in your progress and your accomplishments. I hope that you will go about your daily lives with passion in your endeavors.

Belief in Yourself & Your Abilities Belief in Yourself and your Abilities: You can do anything you want if you commit to it. I hope that you will find your inner strength to persevere and go beyond your potential and make your family, your friends, and above all, yourself proud.

Life Lessons Life Lessons: My wish is that you will not only leave here knowing your mathematics, but that you will also be more aware of what you value in life; what kind of person you want to become; what attitudes help you achieve your goals; and know that a smile goes a long way! If something is important enough to you, you will do anything for it.

Courage Courage: I hope that you will leave here with the courage to try new and innovative approaches and to think “outside the box”. As you move from high school to college, I hope you find the courage to reach beyond your limitations and to stand up for what you value and not be afraid to face new challenges and situations.
