CRITICAL LENS PRACTICE Interpret the following quote: "Good people...are good because they've come to wisdom through failure.” Agree or disagree Relate it to two pieces of literature

YOUR TASK Write a critical essay in which you discuss two works of literature you have read from the particular perspective of the statement that is provided for you in the Critical Lens. In your essay, provide a valid interpretation of the statement, agree or disagree with the statement as you have interpreted it, and support your opinion using specific references to appropriate literary elements from the two works. You may use scrap paper to plan your response. Write your essay beginning on page 3 of the essay booklet. CRITICAL LENS: “The real hero is always a hero by mistake…” ~Umberto Eco

YOUR GUIDLINES Provide a valid interpretation of the critical lens that clearly establishes the criteria for analysis Indicatewhetheryouagree or disagreewiththestatementasyou haveinterpretedit Choose two works you have read that you believe best support your opinion Use the criteria suggested by the critical lens to analyze the works you have chosen Avoidplotsummary.Instead, usespecificreferencestoappropri ateliteraryelements (for example: theme, characterization, setting, point of view) to develop your analysis Organize your ideas in a unified and coherent manner Specify the titles and authors of the literature you choose Follow the conventions of standard written English

INTRODUCTION FOUR STEPS: 1.Introduce/State Quote 2.Interpret Quote 3.Agree with the Quote 4.Thesis (TAG literature)

INTRODUCTION STEP ONE: 1.- State Quote - Recopy the critical lens statement (the quote) word for word and leave it in quotation marks. Be sure to state who said the quote or to note that it was stated by an anonymous speaker. Example: ….said, “…….”

INTRODUCTION STEP TWO: 2.Interpret Quote. In other words, put the quote into your own words. Example: This quotation means that no rules apply when it comes to getting what you want.

INTRODUCTION STEP THREE: 3. Agree or disagree with the quote (without saying “I”) and very briefly explain why. Example: This quotation holds true in both life and in literature because when people or characters in books want something back enough, nothing will hold them back.

INTRODUCTION STEP FOUR: 4.Thesis - Finally, give the title, author and genre (TAG) of the books you are about to discuss and the literary elements, and connect them to the quote. - Be sure to include proper punctuation around the title of the story. Example: In the drama, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, conflicts and themes demonstrate that if something means enough to an individual, it is worth fighting for regardless of what’s right or wrong.
