CSE 1111 Week 4 First Time Freshman Mentoring The CSE Department at UTA will provide support to first-time freshmen through a program of mentoring which will utilize the skills and knowledge of older CSE department students to increase the success and retention of newer students. This program will create a group of junior and senior mentors to be paired with (up to three) freshmen in a mentoring capacity. The juniors and seniors in the group are required to apply for the mentoring positions and will receive a small one-time per semester stipend for each student they mentor. The receipt of the full versus partial stipend will depend on positive feedback about the mentor from the freshman mentee.

CSE 1111 Week 4 First Time Freshman Mentoring The freshmen will be given the opportunity to either select or be matched with a mentor to pair with them through their freshman semester or year. The process of mentoring will contain elements of a student-to-student ongoing major-focused orientation and a one-on-one support group. It is expected that each mentor pair will meet about an hour twice a month throughout the year. A list of topics will be developed for mentors to discuss with their freshmen with the goal of preventing some of the more common freshman and future problems.

CSE 1111 Week 4 First Time Freshman Mentoring Freshmen and mentors will be required to document their meetings and submit this documentation upon request. At the end of the semester, the freshman will fill out a report about the mentoring process and this will be used in assuring the success of the mentoring process and the quality of the mentors. We believe that a mentoring program within the department will increase the likelihood that these freshmen will remain at UTA and successfully complete a degree from CSE in their academic careers.

CSE 1111 Week 4 First Time Freshman Mentoring We anticipate that mentors would:  Assist freshmen with particularly challenging and highly time- consuming computer science, calculus, and physics coursework  Provide peer monitoring of freshman progress to prevent them from becoming overwhelmed in mid-semester  Give information on how to access resources available for student support in mathematics and other topics and the experience of how beneficial these resources can be.  Advise on self-discipline and planning skills that will allow freshmen to meet the requirements of programming and technical coursework successfully.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Why codes of ethics? Symbolize professionalism Protect group interests Specify membership etiquette Inspire good conduct Educate members Discipline members Foster external relations Enumerate principles Express ideals Put forth rules Offer guidelines Codify rights

CSE 1111 Week 4

Notes for Week 3 said: The topic for this week is: Philosophical Ethics Answer the following 4 questions using resources you find on the web or in textbooks. If you use any of the information from one of the web pages or a book, be sure to cite your source, i.e., include the web page address (URL) or the book reference in your answer. 1) What is ethical relativism? In what way does this theory seem to “make sense” as a way to conduct one’s life? In what ways does this theory seem to cause problems? …… etc.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Philosophical Ethics 1) What is ethical relativism? In what way does this theory seem to “make sense” as a way to conduct one’s life? In what ways does this theory seem to cause problems? 2) What is utilitarianism? In what way does this theory seem to “make sense” as a way to conduct one’s life? In what ways does this theory seem cause problems? 3) What is the categorical imperative? Explain what the statement means (in your own words). In what way does this theory seem to “make sense” as a way to conduct one’s life? In what ways does this theory seem cause problems? 4) Find information on another philosophical theory, and answer the same questions about that theory (i.e., what does it say, what are the pros and cons of trying to apply it).

CSE 1111 Week 4 Notes for Week 3 said: Write your answers (2 pages max) to these 4 questions, and put those answers into a text file or Word file called Questions_Week3.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Notes for Week 3 said: Then send a single with subject: HW1 – Name1 (e.g., HW1 – Mary Smith) send to: and include the 3 files as 3 separate attachments to that single .

CSE 1111 Week 4 Notes for Week 3 said: Recap To this point, you should have: Printed, signed and returned the College of Engineering ethics statement. (58 submitted) ed your Intro statement to Dr. Peterson’s address (81 submitted) If you have not submitted those, you are still expected to do so.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What could go wrong? 1) If you sent your “Intro” , you should have received a response. If you did not get a response, try again. 2) Be VERY sure you send your s to the correct address with the correct subject line.

CSE 1111 Week 4

What’s wrong here? Why isn’t law sufficient to fill all policy vacuums? Ans: Laws will be broken.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Critical Thinking Critical thinking is “the ongoing activity of gathering and generating information, processing it, and then using it for making wise decisions, solving problems, and communicating effectively”.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why isn’t law sufficient to fill all the policy vacuums? Ans: It is inconsistent.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why isn’t law sufficient to fill all the policy vacuums? Ans: The technology allows human beings to do many new activities, and also raises issues that never had to be faced.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why isn’t law sufficient to fill all the policy vacuums? Ans: Law isn’t sufficient because it usually never gives the last word. Policy vacuums have to do more with individual policies.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? What is the traditional criticism of utilitarianism? Ans: The traditional criticism of utilitarianism is that it tries to take past approaches and use them for new problems.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? What is the traditional criticism of utilitarianism? Ans: Ideas such as slavery have been proven morally wrong.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Try this one State the categorical imperative. How does it apply to how employers treat employees?

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? State the categorical imperative. How does it apply to how employers treat employees? Ans: Individuals should be treated as they would treat themselves. It tells them to have mutual respect for each other.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? State the categorical imperative. How does it apply to how employers treat employees? Ans: The categorical imperative is the different forms of professionalism involved in computers, such as employer – employee, etc. Each is contractual and holds each party involved to a set of responsibilities.

CSE 1111 Week 4 Try this one Why can’t we mechanically apply standard moral rules or principles to computer cases ?

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why can’t we mechanically apply standard moral rules or principles to computer cases ? Ans:We have never encountered a thing such as computers in past history. We have nothing to look back on to serve as a reference point. Issues such as copyrighting software and free speech on the internet have new and unknown consequences and thus present themselves as a “new species”.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why can’t we mechanically apply standard moral rules or principles to computer cases ? Ans: Computer and information technology have created many new situations and consequences unlike those before this era. Trying to apply old standards will not always work. Sometimes new ways of thinking about things like intellectual property, invasion of privacy, free speech, etc. are needed to understand the new possibilities.

CSE 1111 Week 4 What’s wrong here? Why can’t we mechanically apply standard moral rules or principles to computer cases ? Ans: The issues of speed & capability regarding information technology give rise to problems with simply applying standard morals and/or principles to computer cases. For instance, free speech; how do we apply current standards of free speech to web sites of questionable or debated or slanderous content. This is a problem due to the “nature of the beast”, i.e., IT and computers.
