Introduction Lesson Quiz This game is intended for my 6 th grade history class, to supplement the instruction that I give my students in class. My students are currently learning about World History and to help them to grasp the concepts they need to put this history into context, I have developed this game. The basic premise is that they will be asked a series of questions and they will have to choose the correct answer from several choices.

Introduction Lesson Quiz For the remainder of the class, we will be discussing the history of Europe. Europe has a very long and interesting history, full of wars and struggles between world powers. For this class, we will be focusing on some of the major events that have taken place in Europe over time, from epic battles to devastating plagues, and everything in between…

The Hundred Years War Fought from 1337 until 1453 between England and France Began when French King Philip VI tried to steal English territories in Southwestern France away from England English won many successful battles with the innovative use of longbowmen, or long range archers that could pick off French forces from afar Ended with the English driving out the French in all territories except Calais England France *Images from Google Images

The Black Plague Also referred to as the Black Death or the Bubonic Plague Began in early 1300’s in Asia, then spread to Europe around 1347, first hitting Sicily Spreads to the rest of Europe, including England, within a year, until the end of 1348 The effects are devastating: –As much as a THIRD of Europe’s population is wiped out –Economies collapse all over Europe *Image from

The Age of Exploration Occurred beginning in the 15 th Century (1400s) After the Black Death, nations look for ways to increase trade and rebound economically Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal first to send explorers to Africa –Vasco Da Gama sails around Africa to India In 1492, Christopher Columbus sails for Spain and discovers the Americas, believing them to be the West Indies *Images from and Google Images Spain

The Enlightenment Movement in the 18 th Century Emphasized the use of reason and rational thinking –Problems in society can be corrected through observation and scientific method –The only solution is the rational solution Great thinkers of the time included John Locke and Adam Smith –Locke believed that people are born free with certain rights that governments cannot take away –Adam Smith revolutionized economics John Locke Adam Smith *Images from Google Images

The Birth of America In the early 17 th Century, England sets up colonies in North America –In 1607, first colony established at Jamestown, Virginia By the early 18 th Century, American colonists are flourishing in trade and later grow angry at British taxation –Stamp Act of 1765 –Tea Act of 1773 spurs the Boston Tea Party Colonists gather at First and then Second Continental Congress, where they declare independence in July of 1776, beginning the Revolutionary War War ends with Treaty of Paris in 1783, after British defeat and surrender at Yorktown, Virginia America *Image from Google Images
