Fansubs Fansubs are fan subtitled versions of anime broadcast or released on video, LaserDisc or DVD. While not legal, the copyright holders have largely ignored them. Some licensed titles started life as fansubbed titles, the licenser buying the titles on the popularity of it.

Fansubs Creation (Old-School) Fansubs have existed since the 1980’s. The first fansubs were VHS copies from Japan or taped VHS from TV. Translators watched the video, wrote a script and then timed the video to the script. Subtitles were added using a master copy, and a Genlock (device for mixing two or video signals). The fansubbers created and then overlaid the subtitles on top of the original video. The completed video was then transfered onto a SVHS and then copied for viewing.

Fansubs Creation (Old-School) Fansubs were sent out to anime clubs and then over time the tapes were traded and copied over and over again.

Fansubs Creation (New-School) Digi-subs replaced tapes in the late 90’s. Using the raw files provided by contacts in Japan, the video is downloaded onto a computer, the subtitles are created separtely and then coded over the video. The file is checked for mistakes, errors and spelling. The file is then uploaded by a server or seeded using a Bit-Torrent tracker.

Fanfic Writer A person who writes a story, featuring the characters and setting of an existing storyline. This is usually done without the original creator’s knowledge or permission. Some stories set the characters in wildly different settings than the usual. Some can be sexually explicit.

Doujinshi Artist Drawn comics and pamphlets featuring characters from popular anime and manga stories. Again, can be sexually explicit. Usually written in Japanese but now Western fans write and draw their own.

Cosplaying Dressing up as a character or characters from a Japanese anime, manga or game. Good websites to try are Random Fact: Forrest J Ackerman attended the 1st World Science Fiction Convention in 1939 where he wore the first "futuristicostume" (designed and created by Myrtle R. Podcasts Audio and video programmes produced by both professionals and non-professionals. Topics can run from anime and manga reviews, discussions on the nature of the medium and up to date reviews of the latest episodes.
