Presentation transcript:

2 Timothy 1: For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.

2 Timothy 1:6-12 This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

1 Timothy 1:12-14 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 2:15-16 "We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Grace is being accepted by God because of what Christ did and not by anything we have done Grace is being accepted by God because of what Christ did and not by anything we have done

It was observed that in the greatest hurry of business in the kitchen he still preserved his recollection and heavenly-mindedness. He was never hasty nor loitering, but did each thing in its season, with an even, uninterrupted composure and tranquility of spirit. “The time of business,” said he, “does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.”

When he had finished he examined himself how he had discharged his duty; if he found well, he returned thanks to God; if otherwise, he asked pardon, and without being discouraged, he set his mind right again, and continued his exercise of the presence of God, as if he had never deviated from it. “Thus,” said he, “by rising after my falls, and by frequently renewed acts of faith and love, I am come to a state wherein it would be as difficult for me not to think of God as it was at first to accustom myself to it.”

He had no scruples; for, said he, when I fail in my duty, I readily acknowledge it, saying, “I am used to doing so; I shall never do otherwise if I am left to myself. If I fail not, then I give God thanks, acknowledging that the strength comes from Him.”

Galatians 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! Galatians 2:4-5 some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.

Paul’s Argument “I taught you about Jesus.” (i.e. what He did for you) “You received what I taught you.” (salvation) “God gave you the Holy Spirit.” (by His grace – not because of your effort) “You saw the Holy Spirit at work in you.” (so you knew God was with you) “I taught you about Jesus.” (i.e. what He did for you) “You received what I taught you.” (salvation) “God gave you the Holy Spirit.” (by His grace – not because of your effort) “You saw the Holy Spirit at work in you.” (so you knew God was with you) Conclusion: You experienced it!

Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory. God’s presence in your life is confirmed by the experiential presence of the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:9-16 And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. … those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. … you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. God’s presence in your life is confirmed by the experiential presence of the Holy Spirit

1 John 4:13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. God’s presence in your life is confirmed by the experiential presence of the Holy Spirit

How do we see the Spirit at work in us? He makes the Bible come alive John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.

How do we see the Spirit at work in us? He makes the Bible come alive He gives you the desire to defend Jesus and to share your faith He makes the Bible come alive He gives you the desire to defend Jesus and to share your faith 1 John 4:2-3 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.
