History of Sushi A starchy tale

Due to Japan’s geography, fish and rice were main foods. (write this down)

Island nation meant people had to turn to the sea for food. Mountainous terrain meant little land for farming

The use of retaining walls…

…and terraced fields…

…helped the Japanese to grow rice on the sides of mountains.

Harvest Time

It would be hard to farm and fish during the winter months however…

The Japanese learned to pack the fish in rice to preserve it through the winter months. (write this down)

The rice would ferment while packed around the fish. (write this down) Oh my, this chemical reaction is making me awfully yummy!

The flavored rice is today known as sushi (write this down) NO RICE = NO SUSHI

Other ingredients can be added such as avocados, wasabi, soy sauce, ginger, etc. (write this down) I am known as the tuna of the land
