We will raise our hands if we want to speak. We will use a level zero noise level in the hallway. We will all participate the best we can in all activities.
This year, we will be working on a social skills program called Second Step. Second Step provides: Study Skills Social Skills Handling emotions correctly Recognizing feelings of others Making positive choices to benefit ourselves and others. Website:
Each time that the students receive a compliment while walking in the hallway, the students can add a Mario Coin onto our chart. 1 Power Star= 1 Power Star 1 Mushroom = 10 Power Stars When the students reach a certain level of Mario Coins, they will earn a prize. 10 Power Stars= Eating Lunch in the Classroom 25 Power Stars= Game Party on Fun Friday
I suggest minutes of reading a night. This could be: Your child reading to someone Someone reading to your child Your child reading independently Your child listening to a story on tape/CD Magazines articles are good too!
The state of Kansas follows the College and Career Ready Standards. This is also known as the Common Core State Standards or CCSS. You can find a wealth of information about the standards at this website: and then find second grade. There is also an app on the App Store for iPads and Android Devices that outline the Common Core Standards for second grade in user-friendly language. The App is called “Common Core Standards” and the publisher is MasteryConnect.
To teach the Common Core Standards, we use the following programs: Wonders (Reading) enVision (Mathematics) HarCourt (Science) Houghton Millin (Social Studies)
Your child may log-on to the Wonders website and practice skills on which we have been working during the week at home, library, or a place with public Wi-Fi access. The Wonders website will work on almost any device: iPads, Android devices, Desktop, Laptop, smart phone, etc. Wonders log-in information will be available soon!
Spelling Tests go from Day 1 to Day 5 in our Wonders Reading Program. They do NOT go from Monday to Friday! Spelling Words are practiced and memorized in addition to Homework; they are not included as part of the homework packet. Each student will do a pre-test to determine which spelling test they take. The date of the spelling test is listed on the spelling words.
Overall grades in the English Language Arts (Reading), Math, Social Studies, & Science are assessed with the following scores: GradeMeaning SSatisfactory IImproving NNeeds Improvement UUnsatisfactory
I encourage and recommend that students correct and return tests with a grade of S- and below. Correcting tests gives students the opportunities to earn more points for their grade and to work on skills for mastery. Some corrections and reteaching will take place in class!
If possible, please bring EarBuds for your student within the next couple of weeks! These do not have to be the expensive kind: Dollar Tree and Target have them in their Dollar areas. These will be used frequently when we begin having iPads in September.
Starting in September, your student will have access to an iPad every other week for one day in the second grade classroom. In addition, they will be using them frequently for specials. Next year, each student in the SMSD will have an iPad every day.
If you have questions or comments, please feel free to ask!
Thanks for coming!
