How to Write a Works Cited Page Mrs. Vernon Librarian 2011

What is a Works Cited Page? It is an alphabetical list of all sources you consult or use for projects, reports, research, etc., including –  books  Magazines  Newspapers  Websites  Interviews  Encyclopedias  Video clips  Images (pictures)

What if we don’t include a Works Cited Page? This is called plagiarism (using another person’s words, pictures or ideas without giving them credit). To avoid plagiarism, we give credit to our sources by citing them in our bibliography.

Quick tips Get into the habit of writing down the bibliographic details as soon as you decide that a resource would be useful. Select good resources carefully, not random things from the internet.

How to cite a book Author’s last name, author’s first name. Title of the book. Place of publication : Publisher, date. Meade, Melody. Endangered and nearly endangered species in the Washington DC area. New York: Scholastic, 2009.

How to cite an encyclopedia Author’s last name, author’s first name. “Title of the article.” Title of the Encyclopedia, edition (year). Obama, Marcus. “Renewable energy.” World Book Encyclopedia, 2004 ed.

How to cite a website Author’s last name, author’s first name. Title or description of page. Date published or updated. Name of institutions or organization. URL. Date you accessed the page. Johnson, Magic. Shooting hoops for fitness. 17 Jan Sports Illustrated for Kids Apr

In Text Citations To quote directly from a text, place the author and page number of your source in parenthesis right after the information you are citing. “Sixty percent of women over forty have high blood pressure.” (Corning 8) Or…

Dr. Corning states, “Sixty percent of women over forty have high blood pressure” (8).

Sample works cited page Works Cited Anderson, John. The World of Energy. New York:Knopf, Jamison, Susan. “Costume.” World Book Encyclopedia, 1985 ed. Mabillard, Amanda. “Shakespeare of Stratford.” Shakespeare Online (19 Sept. 2003).
