GENERALS FOR THE NORTH By Monica Garden

Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant  From Ohio  Attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York  Republican  Most important battles were Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg  Captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson(First Union victory) and Vicksburg  Was taught a lesson through his loss at Shiloh and was never surprised by another attack  Ended the siege at Chattanooga  Suffered a massive loss at Cold Harbor  Fought aggressively, made quick decisions, and led his troops with energy and determination  He was very confident in his own decision  Fun Fact: His real initials spell out H.U.G.

Major General Irvin McDowell(Union’s First Commander)  Born in Columbus, Ohio  Most important battles were the First Battle of Bull Run, Cedar Mountain, and the Second Battle of Bull Run  Taught at West Point Military Academy  He followed an imaginative but ambitiously complex strategy during the First Battle of Bull Run that his troops could not follow, which resulted in failure  Started off winning, but then Stonewall Jackson showed up with reinforcements  Replaced by McClellan after the defeat  Also blamed for the failure of the Second Battle of Bull Run

Major General George McClellan  From Pennsylvania  Graduated from West Point  Democrat  Most important battles: Peninsula Campaign, Antietam  In May 1861, he was made commander of the Department of Ohio  Ran the confederates out of Western Virginia  Initiated the Peninsular campaign and was blamed for its collapse  Defeated the Confederates at the battle of Antietam  His meticulousness actually led to his defeat  Replaced by Burnside after the Peninsula Campaign

Major General John Pope  From Illinois  Important battle: New Madrid, Second Battle of Bull Run  Captured New Madrid on March 14, 1862  Captured Island No. 10 through a sneak attack  Suffered a loss at the Second Battle of Bull Run because he was indecisive  He was very confident, almost to the point of arrogance  Historians believe Pope was incompetent and timid

Major General Ambrose Burnside  From Rhode Island  Most important battles: First Battle of Bull Run,New Bern & North Carolina coast, Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Knoxville Campaign, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg  captured Roanoke Island, New Bern, Beaufort, and Fort Macon  Commanded under George McClellan in Antietam and cost the Union the battle because of his stubbornness  Defeated terribly at Fredericksburg  Removed by Lincoln in order to keep Joseph Hooker  Commanded under Grant and Meade

Major General Joseph Hooker  From Massachusetts  Most important battles: Peninsula Campaign, Second Battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Battle of Lookout Mountain, Battle of Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign  Replaced Burnside after the battle of Fredericksburg  At Chancellorsville, he led the largest Union army ever into a loss to the Confederacy  Replaced by George Meade  Criticized McClellan for his failure to capture Richmond  Overall he was an outstanding administrator  Did many things to help the lives of the troops like fixing the daily diet and camp sanitary changes

Major General George Meade  From Pennsylvania  Most important battle: Chancellorsville, Gettysburg  Replaced Joseph Hooker after the battle of Chancellorsville  Won the battle of Gettysburg with the Army of the Potomac, which was the turning point of the war  Radical Republicans thought that he was a copperhead and tried to relieve him from command. However, they failed.  Criticized by Lincoln for not aggressively pursing the Confederates  He was known to be a modest man
