FRA 2015: Status of Preparations

One goal, two approaches: Goal: Accurate reporting of global forest resources Two approaches: – Country reports Essential basis for global reporting if more than just snapshots of land cover are desired – Remote sensing Integrating global analyses into country reporting

Guidance from FRA users Most important topics: 1.Extent of forest resources 2.Productive functions of forests 3.Biological diversity Greater emphasis on: 1.Progress toward SFM 2.Planted forest 3.Natural forest Results from first FRA users survey

Guidelines used in selection of 2015 variables Finding a set of variables that: – Best meet user needs – Are important in understanding forest resource dynamics – Are practical to collect with some reasonable expectation of quality – Contribute to improved quality – Reduce reporting burden

The 2015 slate of variables... Seeks to contribute answers to 20 globally- significant forest resource questions Attempts to reduce reporting burdens: – 58% of all variables pre-filled from FRA 2010 ( ) – 56% of all variables are included in the CFRQ (i.e. >80 countries will report just once for multiple organizations) – 13% of all entries of new data will be pre-filled, primarily from remote sensing, FAOSTAT and UN data sources Address stated user needs and improve overall quality

Changes from FRA2010 CategoryNature of change DegradationIncluded for the first time from remote sensing DeforestationIncluded for the first time. Special categoriesBamboo and rubber dropped Forest area projection2030 target, “Forest Futures” Transition matrixArea of change across major landuses

Collecting and managing data through the FRIMS FAO is finalizing an online database called the Forest Resources Information System (FRIMS) FRIMS will allow countries to enter and manage FRA and CFRQ data online Optional in 2015 – mandatory in 2020 All Country Reports will be entered into FRIMS by end of 2013 by countries directly or by FAO All reviews will be done through FRIMS Multiple output options will be provided by the end of 2013

Key Milestones February 2013: Capacity building workshops begin April 2013: FRIMS release 1.0 May 2013: Global meeting of National Correspondents July 2013: First country reporting deadline December 2013: Country reports completed/reviewed March 2014: Initial data analyses completed March 2015: Key findings released September 2015: FRIMS opened to public, FRA report(s) released

Thank you…
