Wildlife Management AG-WL-2

What is Wildlife? A broad term which includes non-domesticated plants, animals, and other living things Domestication: bringing species under human control What are some non-domesticated plants, animals, or other living things?

How do humans use wildlife? Consumptive – harvesting o Hunting, trapping, fishing Non-consumptive – interaction whereas wildlife is not harvested o Bird watching

Non-game Species To most citizens, nongame wildlife usually means animals that are not hunted, trapped, or fished in a traditional sense What are some examples of non-game species?

Game Species Game species are those which are generally considered to be hunted or trapped What are some examples of game species?

What value does wildlife have? Commercial: profits from wildlife Game: individuals spend considerable amounts of money on hunting and fishing Aesthetic: the value people place on wildlife for its beauty and appeal Scientific: value of wildlife for research and study Ecological: each species has certain roles in nature

Economic Importance of Wildlife in Georgia How much does it cost to deer hunt? Costs: Licenses Camouflage/Orange Vests Weapon of Choice Ammunition Tree Stand Land Lease/ Land Preparation Deer Processing Fees Taxidermy Fees

What is Wildlife Management? The application of scientific and technical principles to wildlife populations and habitats to maintain such populations (particularly mammals, birds, and fish) essential for recreational and/or scientific purposes What are some examples of species management?

Wildlife Management vs. Agricultural Sciences All agricultural sciences are based on sound, scientific research. Modern wildlife management is no different. Today’s wildlife management techniques are based on proven research.

What are various approaches to wildlife management? Preservation o Allowing nature to take its course, this practice is often used in National Parks Management o Manipulation of populations or habitats to achieve desired goals Conservation o Effort to maintain and use natural resources wisely

What are four significant areas of wildlife conservation? Research Education Law Enforcement Wildlife Management

Potential Wildlife Management Goals Increase population size Remove individuals from the population on a continuous basis, which requires that enough individuals be left to reproduce and replace those that were removed. Stabilize or reduce the population Combinations of these goals can be used to better manage an area

What are some game management objectives currently being used in the US to manage wildlife? The art of making land produce sustained annual crops of wild game for recreational use. Components of Game Management: o Restriction of Hunting Predator Control o Reservations of Game Land Parks, National Forests, Refuges o Artificial Replenishment Restocking, Game Farming o Environmental Controls Control of Food, Special Factors, Disease

Assignment Create a wildlife habitat area o Select an area and identify animals you would like to attract. o Develop a list of management objectives needed to attract species. o Explain how to implement management objectives. o Designate the area with signage.
