…can be at the bottom of your list …

…and you can’t do it on the bus!

…just staring at the words won’t help… …very few people have a photographic memory so you will have to do some writing!

Here are a few tricks and tips to help!

The traditional method…

das Haus H- a - u - s Haus 1.Look2.Say 3. Cover 4.Write 5. Check 1

and some variations…

Fold a piece of A3 paper in half lengthways. Write 7 words in the first column and the English meanings in the second column. Use your book to check you get it right. Fold over the 1 st column so that only the English meanings are visible. Write the French words as best you can from memory in column 3. Open it up and check your answers. Now fold over columns 1 and 2 to practise the English meanings in column 4. Check your answers. And so on. J’ai Tu as Il/elle/on a Nous avons Vous avez Ils/elles ont I have you have he/she/it has We have you (pl) have they/you(pol) have 2

The pyramid method La natationl la la n la na la nat la nata la natat la natati la natatio la natation Write the word out at the top of a piece of paper. Underneath write the word out adding a letter each time until the word is complete again… Then test yourself! 3

Buy lots of highlighter pens… Traffic light your vocab list… No idea what it means or how to spell it Sort of know it but can’t spell it Can spell 100% accurately and know the meaning 4

OR… colour code into masculine feminine neuter plural 5

Get a good visual image…. like Marge for example…. Write all the words on one topic in blue for example, past participles. Opinions words could be in orange… …and reasons could be in green. Now when you think of Marge you should be able to visualise your word groups… … and it should all come flooding back! 6

Get your vocab list… 1.J’aimerais 2.Je déteste 3.J’ai fait 4.le cyclisme 5.La plongée On a new piece of paper get rid of the vowels. 1.J’_ _ m__r_ _ s 2.J__ d__t__st__ 3.J’_ _ f_ _ t 4.l_cycl__sm_ 5.L_ pl_ng_ __ Fill in the gaps. Check your work or get a friend to…. Re –do the dodgy ones. 7

Take it further… Get your vocab list… 1.J’aimerais 2.Je déteste 3.J’ai fait 4.le cyclisme 5.La plongée On a new piece of paper get rid of everything but the first letter. 1.J’a J_ d J’a- f l_ c l_ p Fill in the gaps. Check your work or get a friend to…. Re –do the dodgy ones. 8

Look at the following words/phrases and award them a number (1 – 5) according to the criteria below. (Write the number in the word box.) 1. I can spell this word/phrase and I know what it means. 2. I know what it means. 3. I think I know what it means. 4. I know I have learnt this word/phrase but I can’t remember what it means. 5. I have never seen that word/phrase before. a) Le cyclismeb) Le VTTc) nagerd) La natation e) Le footingf) courirg) l’athlétismeh) j’ai fait i)j’ai pratiquéj) j’ai jouék) ayant fait l) Après avoir fait m) Avant de jouer n) En jouanto) Si je jouais p) Si c’était possible Activity 2. Now look up any you didn’t know using a dictionary and write the English meaning in the box under the French word. 9

Make a shape you can remember with them on the back of your door… 10

Masculine words Fem words Opinions Or group types of words and stick them around your room. Visualise your room and the words. i.e opinions stuck to wardrobe

Record yourself saying groups of 7 or 14 words (you learn best in 7’s apparently!)… Step 1 Say the word Spell the word Say the English Repeat until first group of 7 complete Step 2 Say the word Spell the word Pause for 3 secs Repeat until first group of 7 complete Step 3 Say the word Pause for 6 secs Repeat until first group of 7 complete Step 4 Say the English word Pause for 6 secs Repeat until first group of 7 complete Step 5 Playback 1 st pause – give the English meaning 2 nd pause – spell the word and give the meaning 3 rd pause – give the German/French meaning and spell the word. Repeat until confident ! 11

Visual Learner? Make flashcards or a memory game. If you write the word on the bottom you can fold it over to test yourself. 12

VISUALISE the following items to help you remember the French word! e.g.. The French word for a chicken is poule.IMAGINE a chicken sitting in a pool of water. Now, THINK of each item for 10 seconds to help you remember the French word! 1. The French word for restaurant is restaurant. Imagine a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel Tower.. 2. The French word for waiter is garçon. Imagine a waiter who has left the gas on and burnt your meal. 3. The French word for food is nourriture. Imagine asking the waiter if there is food to nourish you. 4. The French word for glass is verre. Imagine telling the waiter it is not fair that you don't have a glass. 5. The French word for garlic is ail. Imagine someone poking you in the eye with some garlic. 6. The French word for snail is escargot. Imagine a ship with its cargo of snails.

Activity: We’re going to use Post It Notes or white boards to see which memory technique(s) works best Preparation and Instructions: 1.Choose your chosen method to learn the group of words 2.Shut your books and take a Post It note. 3.When the music starts they should write as many of the words from the list as they can remember (without looking). 4.After about 30 secs the music will stop. 5. Swap with your partner and try to add to your list (ie the words your partner couldn’t remember) 6.Collect all the words back on the board from volunteers and check the meaning. 7.Repeat 5-6 and then compare your lists.

Here come your words/phrases…. Time phrases! 1) Aujourd’hui 2) Hier 3) Demain 4) Le weekend dernier 5) La semaine dernière 6) Avant 7) Quand j’étais petite 8) Dans le futur 9)À l’avenir 10)Il y a 2 ans If you’re feeling brave, try some ‘power phrases’ as well’ 1.Après avoir joué 2.Je viens de faire 3.J’aimerais jouer 4.Si c’était possible

Home Learning… 1. You are being given a group of 21 words. In groups of 7 words you need to try a minimum of 3 different vocabulary learning styles. You will evaluate the styles and feed back to the rest of the class in the next lesson and there may be a vocab test. 2. Can you think of any other ways to learn vocabulary? 3. In what other subject areas/tasks could you use these skills? Give three examples with reasons for your answers.

Revising Grammar Review the main grammar points that are covered in your textbook chapters. All the grammar points are laid out in the back of the textbook. Condense the main rules down into notes and use your highlighters and coloured pens to make the notes clear. Use the extra grammar exercises in the backs of your books to practise a particular rule. Show your teacher and ask them for advice if you need it. They will be happy to help you!

Past Present Future Print out the tenses timeline and write out verbs / sentences in each of the tenses…… J’ai joué au foot. Je joue au foot. Je vais jouer au foot.

Past Present Future

First make your cards….. You can either do two sets, one with the MFL and the other with the English….. Or you can do one set of cards with the MFL on the front and English on the back. Don’t forget, the words on your cards can be colour coded too! With two sets, you can play pairs…. turn the cards face down and pick them up in twos until you get pairs. Get someone to test you from your cards. Test yourself, putting the cards into a ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ pile until the ‘wrong’ pile is non existent!
