Arkansas Teacher Evaluation Pilot Program

Who helped design it What do we use as a guide

What is it based upon?

How are we going to get there? A Road Map…. Because teaching is complex, it is helpful to have a road map through the territory, structured around a shared understanding of teaching. Charlotte Danielson

What would count as evidence of success? Describe the activities you will do to work toward your goal and their time line? Activities Time Line What resources will you need to better achieve your goal?

September Professional Growth plans Design plan with specific focus (what is that 1 thing you said at the end of last year you want to do better) What Domain and component will that fall into? What steps will you use to improve that area? What is it that you hope to accomplish? How will you measure your success?

Teacher Thoughts When asked if they felt the rubric was easy to understand – ALL said yes When asked if they agreed with the rubric rating – 19 said yes, 1 said not sure, NO no’s. When asked about if they would rather video their observation and have the administrator review the video or have the administrator do a on site observation ALL said on site.

Teacher Thoughts cont. When asked their thoughts on revamping the teacher evaluation program – answers varied A few thought it was a good idea. Several thought the old system used was fine – the problem was the way it was used. A couple thought test scores should weigh more on teacher evaluation so glad the portfolio part was a part of this system. One stated that if professional development is determined by the results of the evaluation then it’s a positive change. One expressed concern that the evaluator might be bias.

Favorite teacher comment - What are your thoughts on the state revamping the teacher evaluation program? “It appears that it is very relevant to improving instruction. The state department did an excellent job in presenting the evaluation as a positive useful tool for us to use. While there is a great deal of material to read and new terminology – it correlated classroom learning-improving in all aspects planning, environment, instruction and professional responsibilities. “

Suggestions for Principals Read Charlotte Danielson’s 2 books prior to training Enhancing Professional Practice – A Framework for Teaching and The Framework for Teaching Evaluation Instrument 2011 edition Do book study with teachers prior to their training to alleviate some of the stress/confusion Do Teachscape training as a group with teachers Do Teachscape training as a group with administrators Invest in 2 handbooks by Charlotte Danielson -1) The Handbook for Enhancing Professional Practice: Using the Framework for Teaching in Your School and 2) Implementing the Framework for Teaching. Make sure technology is working when you go to take the test!!
