Using Graphs to Relate 2 Quantities You can use graphs to visually represent the relationship between two variable quantities as they both change. Tables and graphs can both show relationships between variables. Data from a table are often displayed using a graph to visually represent the relationship.

Turn to page 234 in your textbook and lets look at some tables and graphs so that we can identify the variables and how the variables are related at various points on the graph.

Domain and Range What did we say a RELATION was? A set of ordered pairs. Each relation contains a DOMAIN and a RANGE.

So….how do we know which part of the ordered pair is the domain and which part is the range? The domain is the input value of the ordered pair. Simply put……it is the “X” value of the ordered pair. The range is the output value of the ordered pair. So this must mean…..that the “Y” value of the ordered pair is the range.

Let’s identify the domain & range Identify the domain and range of each relation. { (-2, 0.5), (0, 2.5) (4, 6.5), (5, 2.5) } {(6, 5), (4, 3), (6, 4), (5, 8)}

Let’s try another one! {(6, 5), (4, 3), (6, 4), (5, 8)} Use a mapping diagram to decide if this relation is a function or not. Is it a function? Nope it is not…..Why?
