What is Facebook? Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. The website's name refers to the paper face books depicting members of a campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

The History Of Facebook Originally called thefacebook. Founded by a former-Harvard student named Mark Zuckerberg. Was initially a hobby for Mark who then enlisted some financial help from friend Eduardo Saverin. Facebook then became popular on the Harvard campus and later became popular in Stanford and Yale. Mark was then joined by fellow Harvard students- Dustin Moscovitz and Chris Hughes who helped expand facebook. Months later, Zuckerberg and Moscovitz dropped out of Harvard to focus solely on Facebook. In August 2005, the facebook was officially called Facebook and the domain Facebook.com was purchased for a reported $200,000.

What is the fascination with Facebook? Facebook is one of the most popular social networking websites in the world. Facebook opens up a whole new world of people with your same interests. Provides access for users worldwide. Appeals to voyeurism.

What are the benefits of using Facebook? The benefits are countless: Networking Seeking partnerships Deals Funding Job seeking Post a blog

Safety Issues To keep your child safe on Facebook you need to be aware of the dangers. In order to keep your child's identity safe on their Facebook account you will want to talk to them about what they should and should not put in their profile. The best way to keep your identity safe, and/or your child's identity safe on Facebook is to use the privacy settings and security the site provides, however do not have a false sense of security. On Facebook you can upload photos or publish notes. This means your child could be victim to a number of predators. You can post videos on your profile. This may hurt your identity because of the things that are in the background of your pictures. You do not want to give away too much personal information. Warn your child about being selective about who they include in their friends and which networks they join. Some people join networks such as religious networks just to prey on trusting people. Considering all this, Facebook is considered one of the safest social utility sites.

Positives Keep Track Of Friends: Facebook tells you when your friends are updating their profiles, adding to their blogs or have some other news on their website. Photo Album: Add photos and photo albums to your Facebook profile. Blog Merge: Use the blog feature to create your own simple blog or you can merge your existing blog right into Facebook's blog. Excellent Search and Browse: Search and browse for people on Facebook using just about any search features.

Negatives No Music: You can not add music to your Facebook profile. No Video: You also cannot add music videos to your Facebook profile. No Chatroom: I really would have thought that a site like Facebook would have a chatroom or general forum so people can get together online and just chat and say "hi". They don't. They do have an IM feature though, it's called Chat. Naturally, there are drawbacks and controversies to Facebook. The notorious Facebook source code leak has led to fears over personal data being compromised, and has encouraged users to limit the amount of information they post about themselves, amid fears of online stalking or identity theft.

What will Facebook face in the Future? Advertising integrated into the Facebook experience. Marketing Competition with other social networking sites.
