 When you see: ¼¼ - Think QUARTERS!  1/10 - Think DIMES!

 If I have 6 quarters, how much money do I have? - $ How do I write that as an improper fraction? - 6/4 - Mixed Number? - 1 2/4 = 1 ½  How about if I had 12 dimes? - $ Improper fraction = 12/10 - Mixed number = 1 2/10 = 1 1/5

 Denominator - Shows how many parts make up a whole - Ex: ¾ = 4 parts make up the whole, and we have 3 parts  Numerator - Shows how many parts we have in total - Ex: We have eight slices of pizza in total and each pizza is cut in 4 slices (whole pizza is 4 parts) - = 8/4 = 2 pizzas! YUM!

 Imagine this as having 2 equal parts  How many parts make up the whole?  That’s your denominator!  How many parts do we have?  That’s the numerator!  How would we write the fraction if we had 5 equal parts?

 ALL IMPROPER FRACTIONS MUST BE GREATER THAN ONE!!!

 Jenna brought me some eggs for a class Easter egg hunt. She brought over 17 to me (God love her ). If there are 12 in a box, will 1 ½ boxes be enough to carry them over?

Can you think of any improper fractions for the following?

 Model any improper fraction for me  Prove that 8/6 < 1 ½  Textbook: Page , 4, 5,7,11
