Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City bone Address Registry Proposal Axel Pawlik / Mirjam Kühne RIPE NCC

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 2 Background Goal: Cooperation agreement between 6bone and RIRs on RIR registry and reverse delegation services for 6bone. Original slides prepared by –Bob Fink, ESNET & IETF ngtrans WG co-chair –presented at IETF ngtrans WG, July bone established in 1996

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City bone Purpose Creates easy entry to IPv6 addressing for early starters –gaining operational experience in safe environment –testing standards and implementations –testing transition and applications Without having to be concerned about –routing/aggregation –registration –address allocation policies Experimental and for limited time only

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 4 Problem Statement 6bone addresses allocated and registered in informal process Separately from RIR system Continuity and stability needed Reverse delegation required

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 5 Public Registration Registration in RIR whois DB –provides continuity & stability –not dependent on individuals & volunteers –prerequisite for reverse delegation (ip6.arpa; ip6.int out of scope)

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 6 Discussion 6bone & RIRs Draft document on Transition Mechanisms in preparation Open and transparent process Consensus needed in both communities Input needed! Nothing decided yet

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 7 Proposal Transfer of 6bone address block (3ffe::/16) to RIRs Development of policies and procedures for transfer and further administration of address space needed Involving both communities

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 8 Responsibilities 6bone –ongoing operation of 6bone –development of (routing) policies RFC2772, "6Bone Backbone Routing Guidelines RIRs –participate in address allocation policies –address allocation –DB registration –reverse delegation under ip6.arpa

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City. 9 Becoming RIR Member 6bone member must become RIR member and sign services agreement with RIR in their region RIR service fee will be waived for first year - unless other services are required as well - allocation of production addresses possible in addition to 6bone addresses?

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City Allocation Procedure Request submitted to 6bone or RIR 6bone evaluates request RIR allocates addresses /32 allocations made from 3ffe::/16 Larger allocation possible based on documentation and joint evaluation

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City Allocation Policies No additional 6bone address space will be allocated to current 6bone address holders Addresses must be used strictly for experimental, non-commercial purposes Allocations will have a limited lifetime Expiration date not yet determined 6bone verifies compliance with policies regularly (every 2 years?)

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City Return of Addresses 6bone addresses need to be returned when no longer in use if use is not compliant with policies when 6bone experiment is over

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City Transfer Procedures Transfer of records to RIPE DB voluntary for 6bone members On joining the RIR, 6bone address registration records for the member concerned will be transferred from 6bone registry to the respective RIR database Sunset period: Addresses will be revoked if not transferred after two years

Axel Pawlik. LACNIC III, November 2002, Mexico City What next? Finalise draft document Circulate to 6bone and RIR community for review Comments will go into next draft until rough consensus Bob Fink offers help for transition
