Hannah’s Top Plants and Animals

Yorkshire Terriers Yorkshire Terriers, or commonly called Yorkies, were first breed in northern England in the 1850s. They are toy dogs that weigh 4 to 7 pounds. They were originally breed for killing rats, but today they are a very popular house pet.

Dolphins Dolphins are mammals that are closely related to whales and porpoises. Dolphins are one of those mammals that travel in herds. Dolphins grow to 4 to 32 feet in length. Tropical waters are typically where Bottlenose dolphins live. They usually show great friendliness, and swim around ships. Marine dolphins live in nearly all oceans, but they only inhabit salt water. They also adapt well to life in captivity. They range as far North as Japan and Norway and as far South as Argentina, New Zealand, and South America.

Palm Tree There are more than 2,800 different types of palms. They vary greatly in size and types of leaves they have on them. Palms can include trees, shrubs and vines which are common in South America, Korea, Japan and parts of the United States like South Carolina, Florida, North Carolina and California.

Flamingo Flamingo’s have long necks and legs and live in many parts of the world spending most of their time in water. Most Flamingo’s eat shellfish and algae. They live in large groups called colonies.

Squirrel Squirrels are one of the most common and popular animals because of their curiosity and playfulness. They live on every continent except for Antarctica and Australia. Squirrels make up one of the largest families of rodents. There are about 270 types of Squirrels divided into three types: tree squirrels, flying squirrels, and ground squirrels. We have a lot of squirrels that live in West Orange, New Jersey.

Blue Jay The Blue Jay is a common bird that lives in the north eastern United States and Canada. The Blue Jay is blue and white and is a relative of crows. They are about 12 inches long from head to tail. Blue Jays love to build nests in trees and shrubs. They only live for about 4 to 6 years.
