OSI Model Do a quick internet search to find a good picture of an OSI model

Frame relay Packet switched network structure – Data is broken down in packets. Uses multiple routes to communicate among PCs without direct connection Example – video conferencing? What happens when the quality is low??

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) Same as Frame relay BUT the main difference is in the size of the data packets. These packets are smaller in size and are called cells. Advantages: speed, reliability, reduction in jitter. E.g. skype calls

MPLS (Multi protocol labelled switching) Recent successor of frame relay and ATM Designed to work with routing protols at level 3 of the OSI model. Enable network to communicate with each other and can adapt to changes such as loss of connections, changes in bandwidth or preferred routes. Its spots changes in the network The route can be customised according to the customer

PAN (Personal Area Network) Think about setting up a bluetooth connection amongst some devices that you have come across. Think about the how far these devices can operate (distance)

Network Models In group of 4 research on the internet or your text book to find out the two types of network models: OSI and TCP/IP Find out what they are?

LAN standards IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. – Maintains LAN standards that communicate at layer 2 of the OSI model – These are defined as follows IEEE – Manages Ethernet data packet called frames to the upper and lower layers of the OSI model. IEEE – the definition of the MAC addressing on a network card and data collision detection over a variety of different speeds and media. IEEE 802.5: Manages token ring passing over a ring topology.

LAN Standards FDDI (Fiber distributed data interface) – Uses fiber optic technology – Extends the distance of existing LAN over 200 Km. – Enables traffic to go both direction – Greater speed and efficiency – BUT gets complicates Find out the data transfer speed in Optic fibre technology and how thick is the cable?
