Putting the Boot to the Tobacco Industry How to Successfully Plan Tobacco Prevention Activities

SWAT Structure: The BIG Picture SWAT Headquarters (OSDH -OTCP) SWAT Teams Adult Partners CX Coordinators (County) SWAT Regional Coordinators Empower youth to expose Big Tobacco CX SWAT Coordinators (County)

Priority Areas Priority Area I – Eliminate Secondhand Smoke Exposure Priority Area II – Prevent Youth Initiation Priority Area III – Promote Tobacco Cessation (quit) Services Priority Area IV – Reduce Tobacco Industry Influences Social Capital Assets

What are Indicators? Indicators are a tool to help you focus your tobacco prevention activities and bring change to your community. They are also used to measure your progress for tobacco prevention. Examples: 24/7 Earned media that exposes the tobacco industry Creating ordinances that mirror state tobacco laws

What are Social Capital Assets (SCA)? Social Capital Assets are different because, they reflect participation, support, and empowerment to achieve a common goal in tobacco prevention. Examples: Extent of community activism among youth Increase community participation Provide training

Planning vs. Flying by the seat of your pants

What Is Project Planning? Project planning is… A formal process A “futuristic” activity Proactive rather than reactive Sequential or stepwise Collaborative

Project Success Projects Succeed because: Members have a shared vision Members have a shared commitment Members receive recognition for their contributions

Project Failure Projects fail for a number of reasons: Lack of coordination Lack of resources Poor communication Inadequate planning Poor follow up

Steps for Planning…

What is a Planning Tool? A BIG picture of planned activities/events throughout the year (October 1, 2008-September 31, 2009) Not as specific as an Action Plan A map of where you want to go
