Sexually Transmitted Diseases

 What are STDs? Sexually Transmitted Diseases –STDs are dangerous –STDs may have no symptoms or some that come and go. –Most STDs can be treated. –The body can not build an immunity to an STD –All are spread through intimate sexual contact with an infected person. –THEY CAN BE PREVENTED!! #1- Abstinence #2- Safer Sex (Using protection when participating in any type of intimate sexual contact.)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases  STD’s are different from other Communicable diseases: 1.No vaccines are available to prevent them 2.The human body does not build up an immunity to an STD

HIV/AIDS  AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) –a deadly disease that interferes with the body’s natural ability to fight infection  HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) –the virus that causes AIDS

HIV/AIDS  AIDS IS A DEADLY VIRUS –there is no vaccine and NO CURE, it is Fatal!  You can be a carrier of HIV without having AIDS. –An apparently healthy person who has HIV in the blood can pass it on to others. –People infected with HIV have the virus for an average of 10 years before showing any symptoms of AIDS.  AIDS is easy to prevent through ABSTINENCE.

HIV/AIDS  How HIV is spread. –Sexual relations with an infected person –Using the same needle as and infected person –Transfusions and other medical treatments using blood from infected person (Because of testing this is very uncommon) –Passing the virus from infected mother to fetus  How HIV is not spread. –Through the air –Through closed mouth kissing –Casual contact with an infected person –Mosquitoes that have bitten an infected person –Sharing eating utensils –Donating blood

Sexually Transmitted Diseases  Common STDs –Chlamydia –HPV (Human Papillomavirus Virus) –Gonorrhea –Genital Warts –Genital Herpes –Syphilis –Others  See STD Notes Table
