Indefinite Articles A and an are called indefinite articles because they refer to one of a general group of people, places, things, or ideas. A is used with a consonant sound An is used with a vowel sound. Don’t confuse spellings with sounds.

The Article The The is called a definite article because it identifies specific people, places, things, or ideas. The valuable statue is the only one of its kind.

Proper Adjectives Proper adjectives are formed from proper nouns. A proper adjective ALWAYS begins with a capital letter. Examples: The Italian statue is on display at the Houston museum. The February exhibit follows a show of French paintings.

Some Proper Adjectives… Although most proper adjectives are formed from proper nouns by adding one of the previous endings, some are formed differently. For those, you must check a dictionary.

A predicate adjective follows a linking verb and modifies the subject of the sentence. A and an are called indefinite articles because they refer to one of a general group of people, places, things, or ideas. The is called a definite article because it identifies specific people, places, things, or ideas.

Compound Adjectives A compound adjective is an adjective that comprises more than one word. Usually, hyphens are used to link the words together to show that it is one adjective. Examples: Please request a four-foot table. ('Four-foot' is an adjective describing the table. A hyphen is used to link 'four' and 'foot' to show that it is one adjective.) It is a 6-page document. Claire worked as a part-time keeper at the safari park. That is an all-too-common mistake.
