The Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 12 Jan-Apr 2014 FXCC

Hebrews 11 and before Jesus is greater than – Angels – Moses – Prophets – Levitical Priesthood – Jewish High Priest Examples of faith

Hebrews 12 What is faith? Discipline is not all bad Discipline – do you like it What is the difference between a sprint and a marathon?

Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, 2 keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Note the “Therefore” All those talked about in chapter 11 persevered Can the readers (or we) do any less? What is the Greek word for witness? – Martys aka martyr

Hebrews 12:1-2 All of those OT heroes are now like spectators in a stadium We might think of them as watching us, maybe even cheering us on The point is, they are an example and an inspiration to us Those who have borne witness

Hebrews 12:1-2 Whatever is impeding us/slowing us down, needs to be gotten rid of What is impeding us? SIN – The SIN Get rid of the sin and run with endurance – I Cor 9:24-27 – II Tim 4:7-8

I Corinthians 9 “ 24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air. 27 Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.”

II Timothy 4 “ 7 I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith! 8 Finally the crown of righteousness is reserved for me. The Lord, the righteous Judge, will award it to me in that day – and not to me only, but also to all who have set their affection on his appearing.”

Hebrews 12:1-2 How do we keep on going? Look to Jesus/look at our goal/look at our example Jesus endured, even the cross – He is our BEST EXAMPLE of faith Because He knew there was something MUCH better at the end.

Hebrews 12: Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up. 4 You have not yet resisted to the point of bloodshed in your struggle against sin. 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons? “My son, do not scorn the Lord’s discipline or give up when he corrects you. 6 “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.”

Hebrews 12: Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? 8 But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons. 9 Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life?

Hebrews 12: For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness. 11 Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your listless hands and your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but be healed.

Hebrews 12:3-13 Is your life rough? Consider that as discipline Discipline from God Discipline from your father is a sign of love! If your father doesn’t care about you – He will let you do whatever you want – Prov 3:11-12 – James 1:2-4

Hebrews 12:3-13 Prov 3 “ 11 My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord, and do not loathe his rebuke. 12 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.” James 1 “ 2 My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything.”

Hebrews 12:3-13 Do you enjoy discipline? NO?! – Of course not God’s discipline is to lead us to holiness – And to produce fruit – Peace and righteousness

Hebrews 12:3-13 When disciplined we should – Strengthen our hands (lift our drooping hands) – Strengthen our weak knees – Make straight the paths of our feet Accept the discipline – Do not give up – Don’t become weary or bitter – Don’t be like Esau and give up your inheritance when life is a little bit rough

Hebrews 12:3-13 Vs 10 “…He does so for our benefit, that we may share His holiness.” That is looking to the end of time – To “enter the presence of God” we must be holy – To be holy we must be sanctified/made perfect by the work of Christ (Heb 10:14) – To be sanctified we must persevere in faith That may mean endure suffering – Suffering is WORTH the goal

Hebrews 12: Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, for without it no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God, that no one be like a bitter root springing up and causing trouble, and through him many become defiled. 16 And see to it that no one becomes an immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

Hebrews 12: For you know that later when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no opportunity for repentance, although he sought the blessing with tears.

Hebrews 12:14-17 Live in peace, even when persecution comes – This is not just peace among Christians – This is peace with EVERYONE – That includes the persecutors Live in holiness, if you want to see the Lord Warning! “…that no one comes short of the grace of God…”

Hebrews 12:14-17 Warning! “…that no one be like a bitter root…and causing trouble…” Warning! “…see to it that no one becomes an immoral or godless person…” Example is Esau – Regretted his decision(s), but even tears could not undo his wrong

Hebrews 12:14-17 Esau traded the eternal for something that in comparison was NOTHING Temporary, NOW, comfort was more important than the blessing Like Esau, you can come to your senses too late

Hebrews 12: For you have not come to something that can be touched, to a burning fire and darkness and gloom and a whirlwind 19 and the blast of a trumpet and a voice uttering words such that those who heard begged to hear no more. 20 For they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” 21 In fact, the scene was so terrifying that Moses said, “I shudder with fear.”

Hebrews 12: But you have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the assembly 23 and congregation of the firstborn, who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous, who have been made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks of something better than Abel’s does.

Hebrews 12: Take care not to refuse the one who is speaking! For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less shall we, if we reject the one who warns from heaven? 26 Then his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven too.”

Hebrews 12: Now this phrase “once more” indicates the removal of what is shaken, that is, of created things, so that what is unshaken may remain. 28 So since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us give thanks, and through this let us offer worship pleasing to God in devotion and awe. 29 For our God is indeed a devouring fire.

Hebrews 12:18-29 The writer now compares our situation to Israel’s at Sinai – The people at Sinai feared and trembled – Exodus 19 We are at the new Mt Zion – We can approach the mountain without fear – We can approach with confidence

Hebrews 12:18-29 We should respond with worship/awe/reverence – Vss 18 & 22 “approach”, “draw near”, “come to” – A “worship” term, to enter God’s presence WHY? – Our “God is indeed a consuming fire” (Deut 4:24) – We can approach God, enter His presence – BUT WITH REVERENCE HE is the ONE and the ONLY

Hebrews 12:18-29 Vss another warning! DO NOT REFUSE THE ONE WHO IS SPEAKING – God has spoken – To Israel at Sinai – To us thru His Son We need to listen/heed/obey – Refuse to listen now – The only thing left is judgment

Hebrews 12:18-29 The earth shook at Sinai – Quotes Haggai 2:6 “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven too.” God’s new kingdom CANNOT be shaken That is the kingdom we belong to
