Problem Example: Goal 1 Jackie, Morgan, Kyle, and Chung ran the 100-meter dash. Jackie finished in 17.6 seconds, Morgan finished in seconds, Kyle finished in seconds, and Chung finished in seconds. Which runner finished in the least amount of time? A Jackie B Morgan C Kyle D Chung

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: 12% The learner will recognize and use standard units of metric and customary measurement Estimate the measure of an object in one system given the measure of that object in another system Identify, estimate, and measure the angles of plane figures using appropriate tools.

Competency Goal 4: 12% The learner will understand and use graphs, probability, and data analysis. (Data) 4.01 Collect, organize, analyze, and display data (including stem and leaf plots) to solve problems Compare and contrast different representations of the same data; discuss the effectiveness of each representation Solve problems with data from a single set or multiple sets of data using mode, median, and range.

Problem Example: Goal 4 1. The principal asked each classroom to report the number of bags of newspapers collected for the recycling project. Bags of Newspapers Collected How many classrooms collected 40 or more bags of newspapers? A 7 B 6 C 5 D 3

Competency Goal 5: 24% The learner will demonstrate an understanding of patterns, relationships, and elementary algebraic representations. (Algebra) 5.01 Describe, extend, and generalize numeric and geometric patterns using tables, graphs, words, and symbols Use algebraic expressions, patterns, and one-step equations and inequalities to solve problems Identify, describe, and analyze situations with constant or varying rates of change.

Problem Example: Goal 5 Maria’s family drives 328 miles from Asheville to Wilmington every summer. Maria’s father drives at a constant speed of 50 miles per hour. About how much driving time does it take Maria’s family to get to Wilmington? A 6 hours B 6.5 hours C 7 hours D 7.5 hours

What Parents Can Do: Check homework nightly: –Go over the work by checking that the answers are correct and problems are worked out completely by following problem solving steps –Practice multiplication and division facts –Help your child study key reference pages in textbook: 1. Table of Measures 2. Geometric terms 3. Quadrilaterals & other Polygons 4. Lines of symmetry/rotational symmetry

What Else Can Parents Do? Allow time for real opportunities to learn: –G–G–G–Grocery store: Weighing produce Counting money Comparing best buys Multiplying costs of more than one item Many more ways….. –R–R–R–Recipes: Measuring

More……. Log on to Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for sample problems & work these with your child before the test: Allow your child computer time at home to go to websites to practice math: – –

And More……. Discuss the importance of EOG tests, especially in fifth grade. –T–T–T–There is no summer school. –T–T–T–The scale scores are different from 4th grade, and they continue to increase each year. –O–O–O–One chance to do OUR BEST and be the Number One 5th Grade Math Class in the county and the state!!!

One Final Word: EOG tests have a great deal of weight; however, they are NOT to replace the everyday progress of a child. Students should not have any undue stress during testing time. Students should eat, sleep, play, and relax as much as possible during EOG testing week.
