Properties of Solids & Liquids

Matter is anything that takes up space. Matter comes in different forms. Solid Liquid Gas

All matter is made of atoms.

Molecules Molecules are made of two or more atoms that stick together. Molecules are microscopic.

Look at the molecules in a solid, liquid, and gas. How are they different?

Solids Solids have a definite shape and they hold their shape.

Properties of Solids What it does How it looks Bounce Shiny or dull Stretch Tear How it looks Shiny or dull Color or pattern How it feels Hard or soft Smooth or rough Round or flat Heavy or light

Liquids Liquids flow, pour, and take the shape of any container.

Properties of Liquids Color Clear or cloudy Thick or thin Oily Smelly

How can we change water to a different form? Freeze water to make ice (SOLID) Heat water to make steam (GAS) Melt ice to make water (LIQUID)

What happens when solids and liquids are mixed? * Mixture- can be separated * Solution- solids dissolve in liquid

Sink or Float? Some solids sink in water. Some solids float. Some solids dissolve in water.

Gas Gas has no definite shape and takes up all the space in a container.

Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Use a balance or scale to find mass.

Volume Volume is the amount of space that matter fills. Use a measuring cup or container to find volume.

Four Tests Can you push it? Can you pick it up? Can you pour it? Can you change its shape?

Grade 2 Physical Science: Properties of Solids and Liquids Standard 2.P.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the observable properties of solids and liquids and the special properties of magnets.   2.P.3A. Conceptual Understanding: Solids and liquids are two forms of matter that have distinct observable properties. Some matter can be mixed together and then separated again. Solids and liquids can be changed from one form to another when heat is added or removed. Performance Indicators: Students who demonstrate this understanding can: 2.P.3A.1 Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements to describe the properties used to classify matter as a solid or a liquid. 2.P.3A.2 Develop and use models to exemplify how matter can be mixed together and separated again based on the properties of the mixture. 2.P.3A.3 Conduct structured investigations to test how adding or removing heat can cause changes in solids and liquids.

Mathematics Measure 1000ml of water. Pour it all into a pan and boil it for 15 minutes. Pour the water back into the beaker and measure it again. How much water is left? How much water evaporated? Measure 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sand. Both have the same VOLUME. Now use a balance or scale to find the MASS of each. Are they the same or different? Why?
