Implementation of MGNREGS in Andhra Pradesh In India Agriculture based Livelihoods: Opportunities and Potential 1 Government of Andhra Pradesh, India

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act enacted by Indian Parliament in the year 2005 MGNREG Act

Primary objective: To enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household willing to do manual unskilled work. Auxiliary Objective: Regenerating natural resource base and creating productive assets Third is process objective: Strengthening grass root processes of democracy infusing transparency and accountability in governance Objectives of the MGNREGS

Land development activities of lands of the poor – SC/ST/Small & Marginal farmers Removing thorny bushes Boulder Removal and stone removal Farm Pond Silt application to improve soil fertility Gypsum Application in alkaline lands Terracing in Hill / slope areas Deep Ploughing, cultivator ploughing Compost Pits Mini Percolation Tank New open irrigation wells 4

Engaged SC/ST literate youth to identify all the lands of the SC/STs They were given all revenue documents to identify the lands They met all the SC/STs in the state and captured the status of their lands Visited the lands and captured what is required for each piece of land – farmer wise Schedule 1 of the Act - lands of SC/ST s should be saturated before the lands of others are taken up 5 Land inventory for identification of lands of SC/STs

So far lands 3.61 lakh fallow and 6.51 lakh cultivable lands belongs to 4,51,183 farmers worth Rs crores are identified this year Another 5 lakh acres are identified but data entry is in progress Giving first priority to these works because most of these works are water harvesting and water conservation works Average cost per acre is Rs Land inventory for identification of lands of SC/STs
