Evaluating Africa's HFE Green Economy readiness to and from Rio+20 Prof Godwell Nhamo (PhD) Exxaro Chair on Business & CC, ICC – Unisa, RSA Presentation prepared for the CCESD Experts Meeting, March 2013, Intercontinental Balaclava Resort, Mauritius. 1

5 Key policy pointers to take home 1.GE presents opportunities in low hanging fruit investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, green agriculture, carbon markets, adaptation etc that leads to jobs opportunities and growth. 2.GE also presents risks including: regulatory, reputational, physical and financial, e.g., issues like aid for carbon, FDI for carbon, trade for carbon, carbon border adjustment taxes etc 3.Higher education is key in developing skills, R&D, innovation and informing policy, especially on GE readiness in Africa. 4.At the centre of GE are issues pertaining to climate change: mitigation, adaptation, technology, finance, awareness and capacity. 5.GE is not necessarily new, but was triggered by global financial crisis. 2

Rio+20 RE-CAP: The Future We Want The Rio+20 outcomes document entitled The Future We Want presents six key thematic areas namely: –Our common vision; –Renewing political commitment; –Green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; – Institutional framework for sustainable development; –Framework for action and follow-up; and –Means of implementation. 3
