JUST A MINUTE Karen Morrill Turning Point Presentation 3 rd Grade- Math - Time

Maryland State Curriculum Math Standards 3 rd Grade Standard 3.0 Knowledge of Measurement Students will identify attributes, units, or systems of measurements or apply a variety of techniques, formulas, tools or technology for determining measurements. Topic A. MEASUREMENT UNITS Indicator 1. Read customary and metric measurement units Objective Tell time in days, hours, minutes, and seconds Assessment limit: Use the nearest minute using an analog clock

Prince George’s County Curriculum Framework Telling Time is covered in the third grade during the 2 nd quarter around week # 13. However, since it is an assessed item on the MSA it is advantageous for the teacher to review this skill in late February or early March.

Maryland Teacher Technology Standards V. Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction Design, implement and assess learning experiences that incorporate use of technology in a curriculum-related instructional activity to support understanding, inquiry, problem solving, communication and/or collaboration. 1. Assess students’ learning/ instructional needs to identify the appropriate technology for instruction. 2, Evaluate technology materials and media to determine their most appropriate instructional use. 3.Select and apply research-based practices for integrating technology into instruction. 4.Use appropriate instructional strategies for integrating technology into instruction. 5.Select and use appropriate technology to support content-specific student learning outcomes. 6.Develop an appropriate assessment for measuring student outcomes through the use of technology. 7.Manage a technology-enhanced environment to maximize student learning.

What kind of clock do you use at home? 1. 2.

Can you tell time? 1.Yes 2.No

What time is it? 1.12: : : :00

What time is it? 1.3:45 2.4:00 3.8:22 4.8:20

Please tell the time :35 2.7:45 3.8:15 4.8:45

Open your journals and write everything you know about clocks. Include hours, minutes, the long hand, and the short hand.

There are 60 minutes in one hour. 1.True 2.False

There are 5 minutes between each number on the clock. 1.Yes 2.No

Are there 12 red marks on this clock face? 1.Yes 2.No

The clock face: Many clocks have a number by each mark to make it easier to tell the time. These are the hours. The shorter hand points to the hour.It is called the hour hand. Notice that the number 12 is at the top and the numbers 1 to 11 go around in the direction shown by the arrow. (Fun fact: this direction is called clockwise.)

An hour is made up of 60 minutes. The marks in the picture above show each minute in the hour. Try to count each of the marks and see if you get to 60. As you count, notice that every 5 marks are exactly the same as the red hour marks. The hour marks are bigger, but they are used to count the minutes as well as the hours. The longer hand points to the minutes. It is called the minute hand.

What time is it? 1.3:05 2.1:15 3.1:03 4.3:

What is your opinion?

Just how long is one minute? Close your eyes and stand up when you think one minute has passed.

Time keeps changing…watch
