National Perspectives STEM education initiatives are underway in virtually every state National initiatives and calls to action (such as Rising Above the Gathering Storm and others) have raised awareness but have had little impact in prioritizing or redirecting national resources –Real action is taking place in regions and states Ohio viewed as a national leader in aggressively pursuing statewide public/private coordinated initiatives

STEM middle school approach centered on problem-based formal and informal learning Unique housing of school at National Inventors Hall of Fame Seamless pathways for STEM-oriented careers support systems for non-academic barriers to success (early co-op education, after school programming, tutoring, college access) Community initiated 7-12th Grade STEM education approach w/ shared R&D and professional development Plan overseen by an established regional STEM School (Metro) Year-round Approach, multiple sites with shared design principles “Field Campuses" with key STEM corporations in the region "One-of-a-Kind" Centerpiece Resource---Air Force Research Laboratory Array of educational delivery systems; established NGA STEM Resource Center; STEM Fellows A Network of Platform Schools All Share Common School Design Principles, Commitment to Substantive and Significant Outreach, Strong Public and Private Partnerships for Sustainability and Scalability and Proven Willingness to Share Assets and Work as a Network of Portfolio Approaches
