Technology and Society The DynamIT project Dynamic information services and anonymous travel time registration VIKING Workshop København Per J. Lillestøl

Technology and Society Presentation outline Overview of the DynamIT project The test site Travel time registration by using ETC tags Information services

Technology and Society Have you ever been stucked in traffic...?

Technology and Society How long is this congestion going to last? When will the traffic conditions be normal again? Will the goods arrive in time? Should I choose another road? New dynamic information services can provide answers to these questions

Technology and Society Background Infrastructure is a limited resource Efficient utilisation of the road infrastructure is important Accurate and updated information about traffic conditions is required Freight transport must provide high quality customer service Efficient logistics is fundamental Precise information about status of delivery Information about positions of the vehicles and traffic conditions is required

Technology and Society Objectives The project aims at developing a system for establishing dynamic traffic information This is obtained by: Collecting and refining raw data Evaluating the advantages and willingness to pay for dynamic information services Developing requested services Developing and proposing models for data ownership and responsibility

Technology and Society Main activities Algorithms and applications State of the art Demand analysis Value added services Ownership and availability Demonstrator Traffic flowRegional freight transport Evaluation, reports and information

Technology and Society Information value chain

Technology and Society Architecture overview

Technology and Society Generating dynamic information Data collected at the test site is combined with data from other sources and refined into useful dynamic traffic information General traffic flow Delay and travel time Short time prediction of delay and travel time Incidents, weather and road conditions Freight transport Positioning and tracking of specific vehicles Customer information (ETA) Fleet management, etc.

Technology and Society Test Site E18 Oslo - Larvik Total length 120 km 4 and 6 lanes freeway 75 km 2 lanes highway 45 km Main road; high traffic volume High part of commercial transport Re-routing possibilities 14 antennas (7 in each direction) Placed at bottlenecks and important information points 17 points with inductive loops

Technology and Society Point and section data Point data Speed or density based on a momentarily situation Section data Section speed is calculated from the time consumed to traverse the section

Technology and Society Anonymous travel time registration Electronic toll collection (ETC) tags Time-and-place (TAP) information is stored in the ETC tags

Technology and Society AutoPASS antennas One antenna in each direction

Technology and Society Travel time registration Dynamic Database TAP Information As the vehicle passes a TTMP: -Time-And-Place (TAP) information are written from the antenna to the OBU -The TAP information are read at the next TTMP

Technology and Society Potential users of dynamic information Private travelers (by car) Freight transport and logistics Information providers Traffic Information Centre (TIC)

Technology and Society Information channels Open Internet service and WAP service Traffic information (travel time and delay) Restricted Internet service Traffic information and fleet management for one major freight transport company Variable message signs (VMS) Dynamic message signs (DMS) Short message services (SMS) Radio

Technology and Society Open web services Southward:TraveltimeDelay Lysaker - Lierskogen 14min 0 min Lierskogen - Drammensbrua N 8 min0 min Drammensbrua N - Drammen S 8 min2 min Drammen S - Kopstad 22 min 0 min Kopstad - Tønsberg 16 min3 min Tønsberg - Larvik 23 min0 min Northward : TraveltimeDelay Larvik - Tønsberg 28 min5 min Tønsberg – Kopstad26 min13 min Kopstad - Drammen S 22m 0 min Drammen S - Drammensbrua N 14 min8 min Drammensbrua N - Asker 12 min 0 min Asker - Lysaker --

Technology and Society System for freight transporter

Technology and Society Variable message sign (VMS) E18 Delay to Drammen ca. 55 min Increasing

Technology and Society Dynamic message sign (DMS) Delay to Oslo 20 min Decreasing

Technology and Society Thank you for your attention! More information:

Technology and Society Details about the AutoPASS solution Why separate antennas? Organisational aspects – we don’t have to involve the finance companies Full control of the equipment Amount of ETC tags 90% of the vehicles nearby Oslo have ETC tags 50-60% of the vehicles nearby Larvik have ETC tags Anonymous system No personal information is identified or stored

Technology and Society Dynamic data for road traffic Static data Data which are valid for a ”long” time period Dynamic data Data which describes the actual real time condition Valid for a limited time period: minutes, hours, days, seasons oRoad network oTraffic signs oSpeed limits oAADT, etc. oTraffic conditions (eg travel time) oTemporary closed roads oWeather and driving conditions oRoad work, etc.

Technology and Society Positioning (1) GPS and GSM techniques are tested GPS: position is registered every 30 second GSM: position is polled every 60 second 8 heavy goods vehicles have participated Driver independent log unit Protects the driver’s privacy Unaffected to user mistakes Position log can be used for verifying estimated travel times

Technology and Society Communication system overview

Technology and Society Efficient logistics Excellent customer service requires Information about the vehicles’ position Knowledge about the traffic conditions on the different routes the driver may choose getting to his/her destination Estimated time of arrival
