Major Roles of IS Support Competitive Advantage Support Business Decision Making Support of Business Processes and Operations

Internetworking of Computing From the smallest to largest computers are being interconnected by Internet, Intranet and Extranet. Client/Server approach can be used. Network centric concept is used i.e. Network is the central computing resource of any computing environment. Larger computer systems are replaced with client /server networks. Legacy systems (Traditional mainframe based IS) are replaced by now Client server networks.

Internetworked Enterprises Businesses are becoming internetworked enterprises I.E. uses Internet, Intranet, Extranet to support businesses. It includes E-commerce. Enterprise Collaboration Systems support communication, coordination, collaboration among the members of networked teams and workgroups.

Globalization and IT Businesses are expanding into global markets. For their products & services Using global production facilities To manufacture or assemble products Raising money in global capital markets Forming alliances with global partners & Battling with global competitors for customers from all over the globe.

BPR BPR is used to restructure work by transforming business processes. A business process is any set of activities designed to produce a specified output for a customer/market. Reengineering can be defined as the fundamental rethinking & redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvement over cost, quality, service and speed.
