Research Structure for the Future Network in Asia Jun Murai, Akira Kato and Hiroshi Esaki WIDE Project

Contents 1.Backgrounds 2.Scope of Future Network 3.Collaboration models 4.Administration

Backgrounds in Japan A lot of discussions on Future Internet; – NGN (Next Generation Network) – NWGN (NeW Generation Network ), e.g., AKARI WIDE project has wide variety of R&D testbeds and R&D activities, e.g., GLIF, RF-ID, Health-care, InternetCAR, Live E! – What is the architecture integrating wide variety of requirements from these activities ?

List of Our Issues Management of so-fat pipe, e.g., light paths Wired and Unwired integration, e.g., mobility Utility management, e.g., resource, grid Traffic engineering with wide variety of media (e.g., video, game), regarding latency, bandwidth Non-computer device networking in real-space Reliability, robustness, sustainability

Scope of Future Network for WIDE 1.Area domain i.Applications and middleware (e.g., GRID) on Internet ii.New areas (e.g., High-Energy Physics, Medical, Education and collaboration) with networks iii.Dig into the specific technologies, e.g., wireless, optical, security, mobile 2.Time domain i.3-5 years, fixing the current issues ii.5-10 years, designing with new R&D partners iii years, designing from the scratch

Planning to Apply COE+s in FY2008 Center of Excellence (COE) type of programs in Japan – Term 5 years to 10 years – Future Internet research portion of WIDE(Univ. + Industries) + NICT + NII etc. – Participation of KC researchers (and other countries), from the beginning as primary member – Residential accommodation of foreign researchers Similar models could be applicable in Korea and China

Use of Symposium and Publishing Assumption: – Strong research group of institutes focusing on Future Internet autonomously exists in each of the countries – Joint symposium/workshop efforts between (among) KJ (KCJ). Round-robin hosting by participating countries Publishing of the result of the symposium/workshop Strategic and Active participation/invitation with EU/US peers

Administration Jointly maintaining a united portal or entry to the activities Joint efforts for stronger impact for standardization process – Especially university maintenance W3C/IETF/AutoID/Mozzila ITU/ISO/EPC Establishing a stronger relationship with EU/US peer activities Strategic planning group to achieve the joint relationship

Proposed collaboration idea from KR JK and Asia Collaboration Models Open collaboration rather than closed collaboration – Japan and Korea as (initial) primary members – others as secondary members, such as China, India,... Joint project and/or project funding regionally – japanese can apply for korean projects, and vice verse Collaboration on testbeds – interoperability, role, virtual access,... Joint conference Joint working groups in selected area(s)
