Over 100 years ago on the 1 st of January 1901 there were 6 different colonies in Australia owned by the British. On that day the people voted to start something called federation. A federation is the coming together as a number of states, colonies or nations to form a new nation. Federation was about each of the Australian colonies being more like its own country. All of the colonies even had their own army. Before federation happened the colonies were controlled by the British. When federation happened on the 1 st of January 1901, it formed as the Commonwealth of Australia so they celebrated. There were 3 main problems that convinced people that federation was a good idea DEFENCE, TARIFFS AND IMMIGRATION. The states that were involved in federation were Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia which at that time had the Northern Territory added to it as well.

This is the Coat Of Arms which represents all of the 6 states that were involved with federation.

Robert Gordon Menzies was prime minister for the longest from the 10th of December 1949 until the 20th of January 1966 so he was prime minister for 17 years. Eighteen and a half years all up. He was born on the 20th of December 1894 and died on the 15th of May He went to a local school in Jeparit, Victoria and he went to Grenville College in Ballarat. He got married on the 27th of September 1920 in Kew down from the MCG in Melbourne to a girl named Pattie Maie Leckie. He had three children, Kenneth who was born in (1922), Ian who was born in (1923) & Heather who was born in (1928) His dad and uncle were both politicians.

He was from the Kooyong electorate. He wasn’t liked and was forced to resign in He retired from being Prime Minister and from parliament in Menzies enjoyed public celebrations, mostly those who assisted with opening new buildings, and launching new projects such as his opening of the centrally located Lake Burley Griffin in In 1965 he decided to send Australian troops over to Vietnam, to fight with the USA and South Vietnam troops against North Vietnamese Forces. On the 20th of January he retired from parliament. When television started in 1958 he was one of the first politicians to try it out to get more votes.
