The progressive form of a verb shows that the action is in progress or is a continuing action. Each of the six verb tenses has a progressive form. Forms of the helping verb be show the tense.

Present Progressive: The trained dolphin is performing now. Past Progressive: It was performing yesterday. Future Progressive: It will be performing tomorrow.

Present Perfect Progressive: It has been performing all day. Past Perfect Progressive: It had been performing for an hour when we arrived. Future Perfect Progressive: It will have been performing for four hours when we leave.
